Our new evening walk routing since Zelda died includes meandering around Whittaker pound to say hello to my heron friends. We rarely came here before because, well, we didn’t really take walks without her! ❤️🍁💫 taken in Portland, Oregon by @saddha1

Detail shots of “Returning” for @astera_pdx

As the season shifts into fall, @chefaaroncasanas and his team will surely dazzle us with new creations inspired by the constantly changing ecosystem of the magnificent Pacific Northwest we call home.

Inspired by the yellowing of leaves, the deepening reds of late tomatoes, bright orange of ripening persimmons and squash, the purples of succulent figs and huckleberries, and the refreshed soil that wakes up from the returning rains to gift us with a myriad of mushrooms, chestnuts, corn, and the vibrant greens of fresh moss, nasturtiums, and so much more! How lucky are we to live in this gorgeous, interconnected, abundant world.

I’ve been practicing with haikus after my morning meditations, and these sunny, cool mornings are something special. A haiku about the season (and painting).

Returning:

Rain enters the earth
fruit falls, mushrooms rise unseen
the forest deepens

Go treat yourself to the creative, ambitious, and delicious experience that the Astera team is offering. You won’t be disappointed.

Astera is a love poem to Oregon’s vinified, farmed and foraged created by Chef Aaron Adams. They offer a multiple course tasting menu built on flavors utilizing classic and modern techniques with an emphasis on local and seasonal and sustainable.

Astera inhabits a historic brick building in the Buckman neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The kitchen utilizes craft fermentation techniques in novel ways to accentuate the cuisine, including the production of interesting misos, shoyus, vegetable ferments, koji charcuterie, vegan cheesemaking, water kefir, and kombucha.

They offer both a stunning wine pairing and one of the best NA beverage pairings I’ve ever experienced anywhere.

Also, as of today, you’ll be able to see “Returning” in all her glory as an anchor in the gorgeously cozy dining room.

Go get a reservation, if they even have any after being named one of portlands best restaurants by the @nytimes last month! taken in Portland, Oregon by @saddha1

What do we owe the more than human world after we’ve rearranged it to suit ourselves? My new piece wrestles with extinction, intervention, and the uncomfortable choices that follow.

I’ve been thinking about what it means to stay present to what is — a dying body, a changing landscape, the versions of ourselves and our world we cannot hold onto.

My new essay, “Emptiness Is Form,” moves between the bedside of my hospice patient in her final days, the devastating glacier collapse in Nepal, and the Heart Sutra’s teaching that nothing exists separately.

It’s a reflection on grief, impermanence, interbeing, and the practice of keeping an open heart when there is so much we cannot fix, nor need to.

Gone, gone. I say it, and I stay.
