The four questions that changed how I define success 👇🏽

During my self-care journey, I realized I had been measuring my real life against someone else’s idea of success.

Now, whenever comparison begins distorting what I see, I ask myself:

1. Do I like who I am?

2. Do I like what I do?

3. Do I like how I do it?

4. What is already valuable in my life that comparison is causing me to overlook?

These questions don’t make me less ambitious. They help me build from gratitude and clarity instead of comparison and inadequacy.

I can desire more without treating the life I already have as not enough.

Save this and answer the four questions for yourself.

I’m learning that joy doesn’t have to wait until life feels easier.

If you want to feel more present, create moments of joy now.

If you want to make meaningful memories, create moments of joy now.

If you want to break up the heaviness of a hard season, create moments of joy now.

If you want to appreciate the life in front of you, create moments of joy now.

If you want to enjoy life before everything is perfect, create moments of joy now.

Life may never be perfect, but that doesn’t mean I have to miss what’s beautiful about it now.

What small moment of joy can you create today?

Same responsibilities. Different starting point.

Some mornings, I scroll until the quiet part of my morning disappears, leaving me rushing to catch up.

Other mornings, I read my Bible, complete my skincare routine, take a walk, and prepare breakfast before the children wake. I meet my responsibilities with a clearer mind, more peace, and less chance of starting the day depleted.

I don’t choose this every morning, but I recognize the difference and I prefer the outcome of an intentional start.

What choice helps you begin your day well?

For much of my life, “I’m good” was less of an answer and more of a shield.

I learned early that being strong meant surviving quietly. I didn’t want to burden anyone, and being vulnerable felt like weakness. So when someone asked if I was okay, I said yes—even when I wasn’t. When someone offered help, I said no—even when I needed it.

Learning to understand and process my emotions changed that. I realized that strength isn’t denying what I feel, and vulnerability doesn’t mean sharing everything with everyone. It means knowing when and with whom it is safe to be honest.

Now I can say, “No, I’m not okay, but I will be.”

I no longer have to hide what I’m feeling to prove that I’m strong. Sometimes strength is allowing myself to be honest about where I am and letting the people I trust show up for me.

You don’t have to be okay today just know that you will be okay again. 🤍

For years, birthdays were reminders of what I didn’t have.

Right after my eighth birthday, I entered foster care. Birthday calls came with promises that my mother would return or send clothes and gifts. I waited with excitement until I realized she wasn’t coming and neither were the gifts. Eventually, the calls stopped.

At 28, I began professionally creating celebrations for others. I loved bringing people together and creating joyful memories, but I didn’t yet understand why the work meant so much to me.

At 40, a journey of self-care and emotional growth helped me make the connection.

Now, at 42, I realize that every celebration I create gives others the care and joy I once needed—and returns a little of it to me.

When the people responsible for loving, caring for, and protecting you fail you, their failure is not a measure of your worth. Healing can include creating for others what you once needed yourself. 🤍

1. I’m a perfectionist, and it doesn’t always look like excellence. Sometimes it looks like redoing something that was already good, second-guessing my decisions, and exhausting myself trying to make every detail feel right. This is my second time making this post. I DELETED the first one!

2. Sometimes I’m more comfortable working behind the scenes. I can plan the experience, solve the problem, develop the strategy, and make someone else’s vision visible. Being the person in front of the camera is harder.

3. It took me years to stop measuring my success against what success looked like for everyone else. Maya Angelou said it best: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” I’m learning to define success for myself and honor the way I’m building it.

4. As a child, I didn’t always feel seen, heard, celebrated, or protected. I’ve grown into a strong, confident woman, but some of those childhood insecurities still affect how I see myself and how willing I am to let others truly see me.

5. I’m a wife, mother of five, and grandmother. For years, I believed putting my family first meant my dreams had to wait. I’m learning that I don’t always have to choose.

6. I have spent so much time helping other people bring their visions to life that I haven’t always made the same space for myself.

7. I believe deeply that everyone’s story matters, but I haven’t always believed that my own story was worth telling.

So, I’m finally deciding to stop waiting, start sharing my journey, and tell the stories I’ve been carrying.

If you’ve ever questioned whether your story mattered or felt like your dreams had to wait, follow along. Maybe it’s time for both of us to stop hiding and start telling our stories.
