A lil’ late but here’s my interview with @shoutoutlaofficial from summer 2022. Head over to the link to read about childhood drawings, Blade Runner inspiring me to leave my previous career and go back to school for set design, and catch a glimpse of a few fun things I got to work on last year.

Big thanks to @shoutoutlaofficial for the opportunity!

SXSW Pt1.

Crazy to think that we did this film 3 years ago, crazier to see it get recognized at the amazing @sxsw film festival winning the Jury Award in the Independent Pilot category among a very kickass lineup.

I remember from my first reading of @abendo ‘s script that the thing I liked most about it was how it tied the psychological to the physical. When we walked the key locations on our scout - a dingy & oppressive baseball batting cage and locker room inside a minor league stadium - it clicked again for me. I felt I was getting in the protagonist’s head, and how the obsession with being the best might turn you into an animal.

Working with director @abendo we got to design the vignettes that tied the inner turmoil of the protagonist to changes his body goes through. A visceral throughline of needles on skin, bloody bandages, roughed-up weights in a shabby home gym, and the stifling feeling of being in a (batting) cage; All shot masterfully by @ming_jue_hu.

As a reward, I got to make a fictional baseball team called “Silverpine Wolves” and create an identity for them. Costumes (& my favorite Baseball Caps) by the amazing @karenrboyer. Thankful to my wonderful art team troopers @ruichen, @maciejdzumala and @henrydolann

Mashhad, April 24th 2009
مشهد، چهار اردیبهشت 1388

I was always mesmerized by how the wild red poppies would be born out of the barren field along the boulevard in the spring. The field was one of the many privatized pieces of land in the city that was left unused, discarded and empty. We used to walk along the boulevard with my mom because it was close to where my dad worked, and I would ask her to take me for a walk around his office around noon so I could say hi to him at his lunchtime break. He was away a lot so I missed him often. The first time I saw the field filled with red poppies I was a lot younger. I remember being blown away by them. Thousands of vibrant red brush marks on a green canvas. From then on, poppies remind me of that walk along the boulevard with my mom. This photo was taken much later, in 2009, when I was 17, and about a month before one of the recent turning points in the history of the country. One of the many times the youth would come to protest against the oppressive, tyrannical forces of the regime, only to be responded to with bullets. One of the many times young blood flowed on the streets.

I was always mesmerized by how the wild red poppies would be born out of the barren field along the boulevard in the spring.

Another concept art piece I did for “The Walking Dead: The Ones who live” depicting the CRM base; along with the still from the series.

Back in 2023 I worked on the @amc_tv show “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a concept artist. This was my first TV gig where I did concepts for a full season. I had lots of fun working with the PD Jeff Schoen on creating the visuals that illustrated the direction of the show’s production design. This piece is one of the earlier keyframes that established the look of the CRM military base.

The first frame is the concept art and the second one is the still from the show. You can see the rough base 3D model in the third slide.

April 2024. My dearest @ohnosaracrow asked me to make a tent for the 12-year-old Molly in her backyard. And so, I did. It became part of “HOWL” — a short film about a girl, a wolf, and some backyard magic. I got to bring my tent sketch to life with the help of my rockstar partner-in-crime @micaelabottari. Together, we added so many layers to Molly’s little haven.
More than a year later, I’m writing this to celebrate this collab with Sara & the coolest dp in town @adamuhl which involved tying a lot of knots, tons of thrifted blankets, rain we did not ask for, a wolf-dog that fell into a pool, and a dead skunk hide (signatures of a sara crow production), as well as lots of laughter & beautiful shots where we got to see the crazy talented @zoe._.ziegler and the effortlessly witty @moffatpics

Written & Directed by Sara Crow @ohnosaracrow

So grateful for this experience in beautiful San Diego early last year, and for the chance to work at the incredible @theoldglobe on English—a play that continues to resonate so deeply, and one that’s now been recognized with five Tony nominations.

Staging a classroom in the round came with its challenges, but thanks to a talented and inventive team, we pulled off something that felt both intimate and immediate.

The cherry on the top: I got to meet Arya @aryashahi. A wickedly smart and imaginative friend, and a collaborator I hope to create with for years to come.

Back in December 2022, I got an email from Christine @dogheart7 & Brett @brettjbanakis, two of my professors from NYU Grad Design days and the founders of @ampscenography, asking if I was interested in collaborating with them on what Christine described as “a distilled adaptation of Hamlet which will be haunted by Radiohead’s album, Hail to the Thief” —and scored by Thom Yorke. I jumped out of my chair stunned, in thrill and joy. I had a flashback to my first year design studio at NYU where Christine guided us through reading works of theater and designing for the stage by tapping into our emotional responses — encouraging us to express them with clarity and openness. I remembered how I loved to present my designs with a soundtrack or a playlist that set the tone for the piece. The opportunity to work with two of my dearest mentors from graduate school days on a seminal work of theatre with music by a band that shaped so much of my 20s felt like, and feels like, a dream. I gave the hardest yes I ever have to a project, and so it began.

From 2023 to 2025 we collaborated (as part of @ampscenography collective) on crafting the world of Hamlet and Elsinore, and went through many ideas and iterations until we arrived at what is currently on the stage at Aviva Studios in Manchester. It’s a fierce, cutting and visceral production created by a village of incredibly talented creatives, on and off the stage, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it. I feel blessed to have had the chance to work with Christine and Brett, and eternally thankful to them for bringing me on the ride, for being such an inspiration - as humans and artists, and for their unwavering support throughout this journey.

Hamlet Hail to the Thief @hamlethailtothethief runs at Aviva Studios, home of Factory International, until 18 May before making its way to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon on Wednesday 4 June.
