“You might think it’s just a quick one second glance but there is nothing on that phone that is worth a life,” - heartbreaking words from Kellie Montalvo

ABC8 Conducted a report about texting and driving, and our Director was able to share her story— loosing 21 year old Benjamin Montalvo in 2020 to a texting and Driving offender.

A single text is not worth the years of heartbreak for a family. As Eddie Montalvo, Benjamin’s father said in this clip.. “It is a kind of pain that nobody should go through”

And yet, according to this study, distracted driving claims 9 lives are taken daily nationwide. Leaving 9 families a day — with a lifetime of unbearable pain.

Happy Birthday in heaven. We miss you ever.single.day. Today is filled with “what ifs” and “missings”. But we will concentrate on the beautiful life you lived, the joy you brought, and all you mean to your family and friends🩵🩵. You lived more in 21 years than many do in a lifetime. I love you. Just In 📢 CORONA CA.

The Montalvo family is in disbelief as their sons killer, a 4 time hit and run offender, is set to be released after serving only 2.5 years of their original 9 year sentence.

Velado was convicted of Felony Gross Vehicle Manslaughter after hitting Benjamin Montalvo under the influence of Marijuana and Alcohol (allegedly but could not be confirmed due to their fleeing of the scene and turning themselves in after levels had dropped. Velado admitted to smoking and drinking a tall can during the investigation) The Chino Womens Detention Facility which is said to be closing soon is releasing Naomi Renee Velado this February. Giving no explanation to the family as to how or why Velado is only serving 2.5 of the 9 when in court the lowest stated she could serve with good behavior was 4 years.

Kellie Montalvo is the current Director of the Chapter of SAFE IE and is working with legislators on a bill that would increase penalties on Gross Vehicle Manslaughter making it a Violent Crime.

Weaponizing a Vehicle and holding complete disregard for Human Life should always be considered a violent crime, especially if and when the individual driving the vehicle is operating it under the influence.

Thank you to @foxla for reporting on this tragic turn of events for a family so close to home here in the Inland Empire. by @safe__ie
