𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟱-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝘆𝗹𝘆𝗻𝗻 𝗔𝘆𝗮𝗹𝗮 | Despite her immense pain as she plans a funeral for her daughter, Jessica Gazca is using a tragic accident to effect change for pedestrian safety along a stretch of East Highland Avenue in San Bernardino where her 15-year-old daughter, Raylynn Ayala, was struck and killed.

The accident happened on the evening of Tuesday, September 1, around 6:15 p.m. on Highland Avenue near Guthrie Street when the high school student was crossing the street to pick up her younger brother. The driver of the Saturn Vue that struck Ayala pulled over and cooperated with police, and sadly, Ayala died about an hour after being rushed to a local hospital.

Gazca, a single mother who had just started a new job, had to work that day and wasn't able to have anyone pick up her son from his bus stop. So, she asked her daughter, who, without hesitation, went to get her little brother to ensure his safe arrival home. Yet, in a heartbreaking twist of fate, tragedy struck mere seconds before she could reach him.

While Ayala was struck outside of a crosswalk at a location used by many pedestrians, her tragic and untimely death underscores critical pedestrian safety concerns in the area. There is no crosswalk on the busy stretch of Highland between Sterling and Arden Avenues, where pedestrians often cross, as there are several large apartment complexes and Rodriguez Prep Academy middle school on Guthrie, along with Emmerton Elementary School that neighbors it.

While final preparations are underway to honor the life of a young, promising student whose time was cut short, Ayala is being remembered by many as a sweet, humorous, and compassionate girl whose generous spirit touched everyone around her. A memorial adorned with stuffed animals, candles, and sincere tributes—including a letter from one of Ayala's teachers—now stands near the bus stop where the accident occurred.

Our report card ride with IE Routes was great! We had a great turnout and had a really great discussion about the bike lanes in town and what works and what doesn’t. We use this information to advocate for better cycling infrastructure in our cities. Our bike infrastructure should encourage people to choose a bike over a car for those short trips around town. If you want to help improve cycling throughout the IE and in Moreno Valley join us for our next report card ride later this year.

We co-hosted the ride with @bikemoval and they set us up with a great route where we checked out multiple bicycle facilities in the city

Overall our grading was a B-

One step closer.

Today, AB 311 passed the Senate Insurance Committee, bringing California one step closer to encouraging safer driving habits and reducing distracted driving.

This victory would not have been possible without the leadership of Assemblymember Tina McKinnor and the countless crash survivors, victims' families, and advocates who took the time to travel to Sacramento, share their stories, and stand up for safer streets. Your voices made a difference.

AB 311 now moves to the Senate Privacy Committee on the 29th of June. We're not done yet—but today is an important step forward.

🚨 ATTENTION ALL CYCLISTS 🚨

SPRING FORWARD=CRASH RISK UP: HOW DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME MAKES ROADS DEADLIER FOR CYCLISTS

Did you know that the spring forward to Daylight Saving Time causes a 6% spike in fatal car crashes the following week?
Sleep-deprived drivers are missing that lost hour of sleep, and shifting light conditions, darker mornings mean reduced visibility and more drowsy folks behind the wheel.

In areas where it is turning twilight earlier in the a.m., it's prime time to level up your safety game. Below are some suggestions on navigating this crash-prone period:

1. Boost visibility: Wear bright, fluorescent clothing during the day and slap on reflective tape or vests for low-light rides. Always run a white front light and red rear light—it's the law and a lifesaver!

2. Ride defensively: Assume every driver is half-asleep. Make eye contact at intersections, signal early, and keep extra space from cars. Watch for erratic swerving or slow reactions.

3. Plan smart routes: Stick to well-lit bike paths or streets with good lighting. Avoid unlit areas, especially in the early morning commute haze.

4. Time it right: If you can, shift your rides outside peak rush hours (7-9 a.m.) when tired commuters are out in force. Get your own full night's sleep to stay sharp!

5. Gear up extra: Add reflective accents to your helmet, backpack, and bike frame. Consider a horn or bell for to alert drivers.

Remember, this risk bump is temporary, but staying vigilant keeps you always rolling safely.

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 | For two years in a row, DUI drivers have been responsible for double fatal collisions during the week of Thanksgiving.

Last Monday night, we gathered with family for a vigil to honor the memory of the preschool-aged sisters, Alinah and Navaeh Flores, who tragically lost their lives in a 2024 crash in Rialto. Then, just days later, on Friday night, another heartbreaking incident occurred, resulting in the deaths of two more individuals, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, due to a crash involving another suspected DUI driver in Colton.

These Thanksgiving week tragedies serve as a crucial reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving, and we take this opportunity to share messages from 2024 during the first vigil for the Flores sisters.

Damian Kevitt, the Executive Director of Streets Are for Everyone (SAFE), founded this nonprofit organization as part of a movement advocating for safer streets after he experienced a life-threatening incident in 2013, when he was struck by a vehicle and dragged for a quarter of a mile down Interstate 5 while riding his bicycle in Griffith Park. Kellie Montalvo, who recounted her personal loss of her youngest son, Benjamin, to an impaired driver in 2020, represents SAFE Inland Empire.
