Spring has sprung in Melbourne, and we’re getting set up and ready for what promises to be a great few days (although someone is feeling slightly jet-lagged!).

Who else will be joining us? We look forward to seeing you there.

The start of a new term can feel like a switch being flicked, suddenly it is all full on. But whatever your role, teacher or dancer our bodies need time to adjust. Jumping straight into full on dancing can leave everyone feeling overwhelmed and can increase the risk of injury and stress.

Easing into term gives dancers time to reconnect with movement, technique and their bodies, while teachers also get the chance to find their rhythm again. A few things we find useful to remember are to:

💙Reintroduce dancers gradually with shorter, lower-intensity sessions, allowing time to rebuild stamina and coordination.

💜Prioritise technique and control before increasing speed, range, jumps or choreographic difficulty.

🩷Support thorough physiological warm-up and cool down using movements specific to the dance style.

💙Encourage dancers to communicate discomfort and injury concerns.

💜Plan adequate rest and recovery.

Celebrating almost 10 years of our continued partnership with the ISTD on Unit 1 their Diploma in Dance Education (DDE)
and their new Diploma in Teaching Community Dance (DTCD). This year we have had a wonderful journey collaborating with our colleagues at the ISTD to revise Unit 1, and we cannot wait for its official roll-out this September! 🍂✨

Also massive congratulations to all the students who successfully achieved their Unit 1 last month! This milestone isn’t just your first step toward gaining your TQ, it also awards students two of Safe in Dance Internationals Core Principles™ of Healthy Dance Practice, giving you international industry endorsement in these areas 🎓🩰

We are incredibly proud of your hard work. Congratulations to you all! 🎉👏

We’re all transfixed by the wonderful world of dance on social media. Some posts are fun, some fascinating, some phenomenal. Others promise to help us get stronger, more flexible, recover faster or eat better.

There’s plenty to enjoy and learn from, but not everything we see is properly researched, and what works for one dancer may not be right for another.

So enjoy the scroll and be inspired. But when a post offers advice that could change how you train, eat, recover or look after your body, pause and ask:
- Who is giving this advice?
- What is it based on?
- Is it relevant to me and my dancing?

Enjoy the feed. Question the advice. Keep your dancing informed. ✨

Celebrating 25 years of Dance Science at Trinity Laban ⭐️

A large group of the SiDI community attended the 25th anniversary celebration of Dance Science at Trinity Laban. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, share the latest research, reflect on how far the field has come, and look ahead to its future.

Among the presenters, there were many leaders and advocates for safe practice across the dance sector, with discussions that reinforced everything Safe in Dance International stands for: promoting health, wellbeing, evidence-informed practice, and safer, more sustainable dance environments for all.

Included were presentations from @nidms.uk (one of our founding partners) by Helen Laws, Matt Wyon, and Emma Redding, all instrumental in supporting SiDI and with Erin Sanchez all still form part of our international Advisory group.

Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to 25 years of advancing dance science and helping shape a healthier future for dance. 🥂
