Last Friday, we had a meaningful roundtable discussion on Public Health Policies in Indonesia and Europe.

The discussion explored pressing challenges in healthcare access, disease prevention, and nutrition, while looking at how evidence and lessons from European practices can be translated into effective policies and action in Indonesia.

We were grateful to have Riedha Muhammad share his insights and experience in public health, clinical epidemiology, multilateralism, as well as his work with the G20 Indonesia Health Working Group, ACPHEED, and the European SHARE-CTD research project.

Thank you to everyone who joined the discussion and contributed their perspectives. It was a great space for learning, exchanging ideas, and reflecting on how public health policies can move from evidence to meaningful action.

Public health policies play a crucial role in addressing challenges such as healthcare access, disease prevention, and nutrition. While Indonesia continues its health system transformation through programs such as Cek Kesehatan Gratis and BPJS Kesehatan, significant gaps in access and policy implementation remain.
In this roundtable, we will discuss public health policies in Indonesia and Europe, exploring how evidence and lessons from European practices can be translated into effective policies and action in Indonesia.

The discussion will draw on Riedha Muhammad’s experience in public health, clinical epidemiology, multilateralism, and his work with the G20 Indonesia Health Working Group, ACPHEED, and the European SHARE-CTD research project.

In Hamburg, together with the Indonesian General Consulate in Hamburg (@indonesiainhamburg), we presented a tribute to a Sundanese gamelan instrument, to remember its remarkable journey of across oceans and empires.

It travelled to Paris Expo 1889 and inspired various European musicians, including Debussy, which was influential for music history since. Afterwards, it silently went to Hamburg, donated by its “owner”, Gustav Mundt, a German-Dutch tea planter in Parung Kuda, West Java, in around 1890. Ever since, the Museum für Völkerkunde —today the MARKK (Museum am Rothenbaum Kulturen und Künste der Welt) — held the pieces in silence for almost 130 years.

Geraldus Martimbang (@geraldus.martimbang) from Sagonese e.V. summarizes the tribute consisting of lectures by himself and Gabriel Laufer, small exhibition by Sagonese e.V., and concert by Margi Budoyo, led by Pak Maharsi, the pianist Calvin Abdiel (@calvinabdiel), and the composer (@marisahartanto) by @sagonese.de

Moin #SahabatKJRIHamburg!

Pada Minggu, 6 September 2026, KJRI Hamburg bekerja sama dengan Sagonese e.V. dan Museum am Rothenbaum, Kulturen und Künste der Welt (MARKK), menyelenggarakan acara bertajuk "From West Java's Tea Plantations to Debussy: The Global Life of a (Sundanese) Gamelan" di Hamburg.

Long before Indonesia was proclaimed as a nation, Indonesian culture, dance, and especially gamelan had already appeared on international stages, including the expos of the nineteenth century.

In his rare visit to Hamburg and this talk, the American ethnomusicologist and Indonesianist Henry Spiller traces the global journeys of gamelan (Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese and others) through 19th century expos and explores how 'Indonesian' music and culture were presented, encountered, and understood abroad. The talk will be followed by a dinner and conversations.

📍 Dapur Mama, Hamburg
🕓 16:00–19:00

🎶 FROM WEST JAVA'S TEA PLANTATIONS TO DEBUSSY
The Global Life of a (Sundanese) Gamelan

In 1889, a gamelan from a West Javanese tea plantation captivated a young Claude Debussy at the Paris Exposition Universelle and quietly reshaped the future of Western classical music.

More than a century later, this same gamelan rests in Hamburg, carrying a story of colonial trade, cultural encounter, and artistic transformation rarely told.

Join us as we trace its journey from the tea fields of Parakansalak to the halls of MARKK today.
