The real story begins long before the first bite. This World Food Day, let’s turn back the pages.

It starts with the seeds: 🌱Through the Programme for Seed System Innovation for Vegetatively Propagated Crops in Africa (PROSSIVA) and the Hybrid True Potato Seed (HTPS) initiative,🥔 we’re working to improve access to quality seeds.

It grows through farmers and businesses: 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾Through the Resilient and Inclusive Agri-food Systems Empowering Women and Youth in Nigeria (RISE) initiative, we’re driving agribusiness growth by strengthening business performance and expanding market connections.📈

It brings variety to our tables: Through the Advancing Local Dairy Development in Nigeria (ALDDN) programme, we’ve supported dairy farmers to improve productivity and connect with milk processors.🥛 Through the Sustainable Entrepreneurship-Led Poultry Transformation Program (SEPTP), we’re supporting poultry entrepreneurs to build their skills and develop viable businesses.🥚

It must withstand the seasons: Through the Early Warning System (EWS): Building Agricultural Systems Resilience through Effective Early Climate Action in Nigeria project, we’re working to strengthen the use of timely climate information in agricultural decisions.🌤️

Different projects. One food system. One purpose: to innovate today so we can nourish tomorrow.✨

In six years 4.3 million+ litres of fresh milk was supplied.
19,118 dairy farmers were connected to the formal dairy supply chain. 🥛

At the Advancing Local Dairy Development in Nigeria (ALDDN) closeout in Adamawa and Taraba, we reflected on how the dairy sector has changed and what can continue beyond the programme.

📈 Fresh milk supplied rose from 256,310 litres in 2021 to 4.3 million+ litres.
💰 ₦1.7+ billion worth of milk was procured.
🤝 843 Self-Help Groups supported to form 69 cooperatives.

Farmers also gained closer access to payment services, veterinary care, animal health products, and feed and fodder, helping address some of the everyday barriers to dairy production.

We said Kano was next. Here it is. 🔽

Six years of ALDDN in Kano and Jigawa, captured in a few numbers:

🥛 5.9 million litres of fresh milk supplied
🐮 ₦2.4+ billion worth of milk procured
👩🏾‍🌾 17,902 dairy farmers enrolled in the formal dairy supply chain

Behind these figures are 57 cooperatives formed from 722 Self-Help Groups, 14,497 farmers trained in good dairy practices, 21 solar-powered boreholes installed, and thousands of farmers supported to strengthen their livelihoods.

At the Kano and Jigawa closeout, we reflected on what has been achieved and what it will take to keep the progress going beyond ALDDN.

Six years
15,066 farmers reached
3.2 million litres of fresh milk supplied
Over ₦1.3 billion paid to small-scale producers.

Funded by the @gatesfoundation Foundation, we implemented the Advancing Local Dairy Development in Nigeria (ALDDN) programme to strengthen Kaduna’s dairy sector in partnership with SAN FOODS and other partners.

Farmers gained access to formal markets, while 41 cooperatives received support.

Animal health, pasture management, dairy practices, WASH and nutrition also improved.

We are now bringing this work to a close with a dedicated Kaduna closeout event to reflect on the progress made, celebrate the farmers and partners who made it possible, and share lessons for the future.

As Kaduna closes this chapter, watch out for the highlights of Kano closeout.
