Africa’s growing demand for root, tuber and banana (RTB) crops calls for more than producing greater quantities of seed. It requires seed systems that can sustainably deliver quality planting materials and improved varieties to farmers at scale.

Through #PROSSIVA, we are working to strengthen these systems by advancing innovative seed production technologies, building the capacity of seed enterprises, and connecting innovations with the farmers and value chain actors who need them.

As our Project Lead, Delphine Amah, shared at the ongoing African Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Rwanda: “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒂𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒅, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒗𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂’𝒔 𝑹𝑻𝑩 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔.”

🌳 At the Open Day for Gardeners 2026, Nigeria’s immediate former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, delivered a powerful message on environmental responsibility, urging participants to become “gardeners in the purest sense—people who nurture life.”

🍀In his seminar, “Leaving the Earth Better Than You Found It,” he challenged society to go beyond appreciating nature and become champions for conserving biodiversity, preserving seed diversity, planting and protecting trees, and ensuring that our consumption does not outpace our commitment to restoration.

🍀His message resonates strongly with the mission of IITA Forest Center, where conservation, restoration, environmental education, and community engagement are helping to build a future where people and nature thrive together.

🌿 Let us all become gardeners of life! For every tree planted, every native species conserved, and every young person inspired to care for nature is a step toward leaving the Earth better than we found it.

Ghana has taken an important step towards strengthening its yam seed system with the National Yam Advocacy Summit, held on 6th August 2026 in Accra. Convened by #PROSSIVA in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the summit brought together key actors across the yam value chain.

The summit showcased the Leaf Bud Cutting (#LBC) technology for yam and its potential to increase the availability of quality planting materials and strengthen #Ghana’s yam seed system. Project Lead Delphine Amah also highlighted PROSSIVA’s innovations for cassava and banana, including Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics (SAH) and macropropagation, as well as SeedTracker for traceability and market linkages.

Representing Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, Hon. Bright Demordzi highlighted LBC’s potential to increase productivity, improve farmer incomes, and contribute to Ghana’s broader agricultural development agenda.

Strong interest from participants, including inquiries about LBC and requests for information on PROSSIVA’s cassava and banana technologies, underscored the relevance and practical potential of the project’s innovations.

The summit marks the beginning of a broader advocacy and scaling effort in Ghana, with capacity development and demonstration activities to follow and support the strengthening of the country’s formal seed system for vegetatively propagated crops.

In Iseyin, Oyo State, the PROSSIVA team from @iita_cgiar, in collaboration with @sahelconsulting, @nasc_ng, and the @ministryofagricultureoyostate,
engaged rural farmers in a promotional and training session on practical seed yam innovations that are transforming access to quality planting materials and strengthening seed enterprises.

From the Smart Yam Seed Pack (SYSP) and Leaf Bud Cutting (#LBC) technology to seed certification, #agribusiness, and marketing, farmers gained practical insights into solutions that can increase seed availability, improve productivity, and create new business opportunities for seed entrepreneurs.

When farmers understand how to produce high-quality seeds and build sustainable enterprises around them, innovation moves beyond research to deliver lasting impact for farming communities.

At PROSSIVA, we remain committed to scaling seed innovations, strengthening seed enterprises, and connecting smallholder farmers with the knowledge and technologies needed to build resilient seed systems across Africa.

Through a two-day capacity-building programme in Ghana, #PROSSIVA is equipping commercial seed companies, certified seed entrepreneurs, and early generation seed producers with the technical, business, and digital skills needed to produce and deliver quality #seedyam.

By strengthening the capacities of seed enterprises, we are improving farmers' access to quality planting materials and building more resilient seed systems for vegetatively propagated crops across Africa.

Partnership remains central to this mission. Together with organizations such as @csirgh and @sahelconsulting, we are expanding opportunities for learning and collaboration that enable seed enterprises to grow and thrive.

Meet Ruth Ibrahim, a farmer in Adamawa State.

In hard times, help still found its way to Ruth’s farm. Ruth says what stood out to her wasn’t just the fertilizer and herbicide, it was the support.

Behind every input distribution is a farmer counting on it to make the season work.

Thank you for trusting us, Ruth Ibrahim.
