We look forward to bringing new work by Atlanta based artist Hasani Sahlehe to Frieze London 🍧 Find us in Booth C21 October 14-18th!

Sahlehe’s compositions often draw on a post-and-lintel structure, echoing ancient megalithic and monumental architecture such as Stonehenge, the Poulnabrone Dolmen in Ireland, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt: sites built to hold space for contemplation and transcendence. He finds a kindred spirit in the tradition of spiritual jazz, particularly the later recordings of Alice Coltrane, whose music likewise sought a sound capable of carrying devotion and inner experience. In this body of work, Sahlehe returns to the ideas that gave rise to abstraction in the first place: intuition, and the desire to communicate a feeling or an experience directly.

"I’m attracted to color relationships that suggest visible light, but also light in terms of weight. There’s an intuitive part where I try to approach it how I imagine a musician would." –Hasani Sahlehe (@sahlehe)

CANADA is pleased to announce the acquisition of Hasani Sahlehe's (@sahlehe) 'My Prayer,' 2025 by the Dallas Museum of Art (@dallasmuseumart). This acquisition was made possible by the tenth Dallas Art Fair Foundation Acquisition Program, an annual gift from the Dallas Art Fair Foundation (@dallasartfair) that places works from the fair into the DMA’s collection. Since 2016, the Fund has acquired over 70 works of art for the permanent collection at the DMA.

Hasani Sahlehe makes tactile and brightly-hued abstract paintings that foreground the physicality of the painted surface in order to explore the phenomenological impact of color and shape and the nuances of human perception. His large-scale canvases are immersive, not unlike the ineffable sensation of listening to music – a major conceptual touchstone for his practice as well as a key component of his production process. In the studio, Sahlehe channels the emotive quality of music, synesthetically constructing a painted space from the experience of sound. He also pursues the enigmatic work of giving form to memories and feelings – exploring a composition’s potential for communicating otherwise formless ideas and sensations.

In his recent work, Sahlehe applies color to raw canvas using two distinct methods of application. Thick and pourable acrylic gel sits on top of the painting surface like a glossy coating, while paint added with an airbrush penetrates the canvas for a softer effect. Sahlehe exploits the enticing tension between these textures. “I consider how paint functions in myriad material states,” he has explained. Fascinated by the mutability of paint as a medium, Sahlehe embraces the shifts and changes that happen as it dries.

Night Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Atlanta-based painter, Hasani Sahlehe!

Sahlehe applies paint to raw canvas by two alternate methods: spraying diffused acrylic paint with an airbrush and pouring viscous acrylic gels directly onto his canvases. This technique allows, in Sahlehe’s words, for the color to become one with the canvas, to emerge from its surface with its own luminosity. Often incorporating bright hues, the artist is attracted to color relationships that suggest visible light as well as the complexity of weight. Sahlehe’s work places value on visual rhythm, structure, and creative experimentation. Night gallery will present new work by Hasani Sahlehe at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025. Night Gallery’s representation of Sahlehe is in collaboration with CANADA Gallery, New York.
