Congratulations to Guadalupe Rosales (LRMFA '16 and 2022 visiting artist), on the publication of Tumbados!

"In Tumbados, artist Guadalupe Rosales and her national network of collaborators explore art, craft, collective memory, and displacement through the lens of Latinx and diasporic experience. The book contextualizes Rosales’ major public mural commission on lowriders with Lokey Calderon, commissioned by the Storefront for Art and Architecture, while tracing cultural narratives of marginalization and resilience across bodies, objects, walls, and public space." (MIT Press)

The book was also featured in Hyperallergic.com alongside a new book by Gregory Sholette, who was our 2024 LRMFA commencement speaker.

The Empty Pocket, created and performed by Heidi Carlsen (LRMFA '26), is a surreal voyage of a woman and a heirloom peacoat. Through movement, imagery and confronting poetry, a heightened tale is told. By shifting perspectives, crossing the line, and going against the odds, can the silence that binds us be broken?

Workshopped in San Francisco, LaMama Galleria, and recently performed at SAIC during this past summer's LRMFA semester.

Lighting Design, Joyce Liao. Media Artist, Nanda D’Agostino. Art & lobby Installation by Katie Korotzer (LRMFA '26). Dramaturgical and Directorial support: Mary Armentrout and Belinda He.

Lev Kalman (LRMFA '27) will be presenting his short film Twin Snakes at the Chicago Underground Film Festival. It will be part of the "Strange Knowledge" program at Harper Theater in Hyde Park. Lev will be in attendance.

TWIN SNAKES:
Time wriggles forward and backwards in Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn’s lo-fi surrealist comedy. A pair of young investigators wander a mansion that is haunted – by both its eastern relics and the disembodied voice of their collector. Meanwhile, the investigators are watched by The Therapists, two Lululemon-clad researchers who follow metaphysical wellness rituals. A kaleidoscopic followup to Lev and Whitney’s mystery feature Dream Team, with spiritual visitations from Condoleezza Rice, Shah Jahan and Brendan Fraser.

Congratulations to Rebecca Rose Grant (LRMFA '25), whose work This Is the Voice of A True Woman is featured in Feminism 250 at Women Made Gallery here in Chicago. The piece is a spectrogram of Grant's voice both as what we perceive as cisgender vocal range and what it truly is as a trans woman.

The show closes this Saturday, September 26th!

"Bored of Necessity: 30 Years of Practicing" marks the first major survey exhibition and book spanning three decades of work by interdisciplinary artist Michael Anthony García (LRMFA '22). Bringing together sculpture, installation, performance, photography, and video, the exhibition traces a practice rooted in experimentation and making art as a way of understanding the world. The title speaks to a central paradox: art began as a necessity for survival, but over decades of repetition, necessity itself became something to challenge.

García consistently reinvents his practice, examining identity, mortality, labor, queerness, Latinidad, and memory. Clothing appears throughout as both sculpture and surrogate, transforming ordinary materials into poetic investigations of presence and absence.

Rather than a chronological retrospective, the exhibition invites visitors to discover recurring ideas that have matured across thirty years. Early works converse with recent projects, revealing how questions asked decades ago continue to evolve. Throughout his career, García has resisted the limitations of a single discipline, forming a practice simultaneously personal and deeply engaged with broader cultural conversations.

Congratulations to SAIC alum David Carroll Orr (LRMFA '25), whose new short play, *The Abated Record,* will receive its world premiere at the Chicago Dramatists Network PlayFest on Saturday, September 5, 2026!

Directed by Adrianne Cury, *The Abated Record* dramatizes a discovered piece of family history preserved in 1830s Arkansas Territory court records involving Orr’s third great-grandfather’s uncle. The piece investigates the friction between bureaucratic record-keeping, frontier legal tensions, and the personal stakes captured across nearly two centuries of public archival documents—extending Orr’s ongoing interdisciplinary practice bridging textuality, historical ledgers, and dramatic performance.

“Uncovering this history in 19th-century court dockets was fascinating enough,” Orr notes. “Bringing these archival pages into three dimensions on stage with director Adrianne Cury and the ensemble at Chicago Dramatists has been an extraordinary process.”

The Poor Farm Experiment: Living in the Play artists Kelly Kaczynski (LRMFA faculty), Mark Jeffery(LRMFA faculty), Judd Morrissey (LRMFA faculty), Kristin Mariani (LRMFA 2020), Michelle Grabner and Brad Killam are performing a collaborative project at the Museum of Contemporary Art, September 18-20!

Leopold Benches: A P(o)or(t)ch Theater blends the retro technology of stereoscopic photography with live performance-based image-making and explores the porch as an emblem of generosity and social porousness at a moment of increasing isolation and division. Inspired by the writings of 20th-century conservationist Aldo Leopold, the work centers on a pair of benches designed to support attentive observation of the natural world. With a set of 12 original stereoscopic photographs guiding a two-hour score, the performance investigates how slight differences in perception can produce either heightened depth or clashing understandings of reality.

This collaborative artwork is grounded in the ethos of The Poor Farm, a not-for-profit residency and exhibition site founded in 2008 in rural Wisconsin at the former Waupaca County Poor Farm (built 1876). The work carries the residency’s platform of hosting as art practice and gathering as a social form into the city of Chicago. It restages the museum’s public space as a “porch”, a site where belonging is cultivated through shared attention.
