The T R I B E just got bigger with Sarah, Will, and their 4 y/o twins Hugo and Kipp (@sailing.kaia / @hydrovane)!

“Sail away with me? Yes!!! A plan was hatched on that first date: buy a boat in Mexico and sail to the South Pacific. What was going to be a ‘two year plan’ turned into life’s greatest addiction and we’ve been cruising for more than a decade... South Pacific, Mexico, Pacific coast, and now the Mediterranean on our third boat in that time. Our twin boys’ first passage was the outside of Baja at 7 months old. Now four, Hugo and Kipp are the energetic crew on our current boat, a Leopard 46. What an awesome network of likeminded people to be part of! Cheers and thanks!”

We swoop back to our grounded land-life for a stint 🦅🇨🇦 It’s been a welcome and restorative slow down, relatively stress free and deliciously easy. SV Kaia is resting up during hurricane season too. Not that she needs it; we know Kaia is ocean-adventure-ready. But give us humans a minute to chill haha

One’s courtesy flag bag fills up quickly in the Caribbean. Kaia’s 2026 stepping stones:

1. Trinidad 🇹🇹
2. Grenada 🇬🇩
3. Saint Vincent & the Grenadines 🇻🇨
4. Saint Lucia 🇱🇨
5. Martinique 🇲🇶
6. Dominica 🇩🇲
7. Guadeloupe 🇬🇵
8. Antigua 🇦🇬
9. Nevis 🇰🇳
10. Saint Barthélemy aka St Barths 🇧🇱
11. Sint Maarten 🇸🇽
12. Saint Martin 🇫🇷
13. British Virgin Islands 🇻🇬

Our stops in Florida and Georgia were interesting. St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. Spanish architecture, brick-lined streets, and a prominent stone fort made it feel like perhaps we’d taken that starboard turn back to Europe after all 😂 Kaia enjoyed a mooring ball for two weeks - and could’ve stayed much longer.

Heading north, we explored the beautiful barrier islands - Amelia, Cumberland, Jekyll, and St. Simons - each rich in history, natural beauty, and that unmistakable Southern charm we’d only seen in movies.

Along the way we caught catfish, ate shrimp, spotted alligators, and walked among wild horses and armadillo.

We also became completely obsessed with hunting for shark teeth. Millions of years ago, this coastline lay beneath a shallow sea that was home to now-extinct megalodon and countless other sharks. Since a single shark can lose thousands of teeth over its lifetime, the beaches and sandbars are full of these fossilized treasures. Very cool! taken in Georgia by @sailing.kaia

Byeeee perfect beaches! Bye turquoise blue Bahamas! Onwards we sail. This passage started with a sunrise motor towards the gulfstream, the highway north with up to 3 knots of current. Winds picked up (frustratingly from the wrong angle at first) and a bumpy 225nm sail later, we enter St Augustine, FL, USA under Lions Bridge.

Now for our re-emersion culture shock of food convenience, city life, and clothes/shoes 😳😝😅 by @sailing.kaia

🌮 It’s Tuesday… which means TACOS and TAC! 🌮

This week, meet Sarah, Will, Hugo, and Kipp aboard Kaia II, proving that sometimes the best plans are the ones that completely get out of hand!

What started as a "let’s sail for a year" dream turned into a 15-year adventure spanning oceans, continents, and now an Atlantic crossing with two young crew members in tow.

From buying their first boat in the Sea of Cortez and selling her in Sydney, to cruising the Mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic, and now exploring the Caribbean aboard their Leopard 46 catamaran, this family has fully embraced life beyond the dock lines!

Perhaps the best part? Hugo and Kipp are growing up with a front-row seat to the world. Their first offshore passage happened while most toddlers were busy mastering juice boxes and nap time!

These days, the crew of Kaia II is island-hopping through the Leeward Islands while working remotely with @hydrovane and slowly making their way toward the Annapolis Boat Show via the Bahamas and U.S. East Coast.

Proof that sometimes a "one-year plan" turns into the life you were meant to live.

Show Sarah, Will, Hugo, & Kipp some Lats & Atts love in the comments and be sure to give them a follow - @sailing.kaia - as they continue their family's cruising adventure!⛵🌎💙

Wild and free, and 7!!!!! 💙💙

Another memorable birthday celebrated, this year in the Bahamas. If “abandoned hurricane-devastated beach bar with plentiful coconuts and a machete” doesn’t scream dream boat-kid Bday venue, I don’t know what does 😂😂 taken in Bahamas by @sailing.kaia

More from the past week, galavanting through the incredible Exuma Cays with @sailingtingalayo

We’re covering miles toward Florida now as Atlantic hurricane season fast approaches. The official start is June 1 and end Nov 30. Kaia will be hunkered down somewhere “safe” by July. Safe by hurricane-prone east coast standards anyways.

Timing is good to head for the land of convenience. We’re out of fresh food (other than popular favorites, cabbage and onion). A few choice items are still left in the freezer so we cooked up some meatballs for breakfast today at sea 😂

That craving for ease (and well stocked grocery stores) has juuust started to creep back in.

Sailing slowly today. Up next: Freeport, Grand Bahama.

First shark waters for the boys - and they’re getting comfortable fast ☺️

Nurse sharks, no problem. But part of school last week was learning the difference between common species here. Don’t want to jump in with the wrong ones!! taken in Staniel Cay, Exuma Cays Bahamas by @sailing.kaia

These islands really know how to deliver a day!

Up at 5:30am for a fast four hour beam reach up the Exuma Sound, timing our navigation through Cave Cay cut perfectly with high slack tide.

Once inside the Exuma Cays we shifted into exploration mode: dinghy mission through the shallows (with Dad tow team), caves, snorkelling the famous piano statue.

And finally happy hour on our very own sandbar emerging from the sea.

Come on… this place!! 🤩
