Glass Lamp, mid-14th century, Egypt or Syria.

A verse from Ayat al-Nur (The Verse of Light; Qur’an 24:35) is inscribed around the glass. These lamps were typically suspended from the ceiling, and while their inscriptions were likely not easily legible from below, their intrinsic meaning was fully activated when the lamps were lit during the month of Ramadan.

I spent the Summer painting portraits of flowers, basking in the sun with them, meeting them wherever they were at, and even using one bunch as confetti with my girly friends 👯🤍

A major figure in Palestinian art, renowned artist @sliman.mansour died on Monday aged 79, after his family said he had been in critical condition.

Sliman spent more than half a century building a body of work rooted in Palestine, documenting its landscapes, people and traditions while reflecting the political realities that have shaped Palestinian life.

We lost a national treasure today. Sliman, thank you for adorning Falastine with so much love & color & ambition.

You depicted Palestinian women at their best side: tending to our land, embellished with the fruits of their labor, breeders of LIFE.

You sought and found freedom in art, so much so, even the occupation didn’t know how to respond to it.

Nothing can prepare you for the loss of one of your favorite artists. Perhaps the only way is to continue learning from the legacy they leave behind.

God bless you, Maestro.

Thank you to my alma mater Webster University honoring me with the Outstanding Alumni Award. It’s been nearly 10 years since I graduated with my BFA. The TLDR version of my Commencement Speech recalls the 4 wise rules I learned during my time here at this University that I’ve applied to my life and practice:

1. If there’s one way to do it, there’s a thousand other ways.
2. If your friends don’t like the art you enjoy making, make new friends.
3. Fake it till you make it.
4. Rules are always there—waiting for you to question them, challenge them, and, when it matters most, BREAK THEM.

If I Don’t Take It Someone Else Will. 2024, 10th C. Pottery shards, hand blown glass.

I looked at an ancient map of Bethel to see the layout of the land long ago. I found that there was a pottery factory down the street from my parents’ home in present-day Betein. Today there is an olive tree farm right where the factory used to be. I made sure to wake up extra early on my morning walk to perform a dig on that plot of land without permission. Digging is illegal for Palestinians because artifacts are hoarded for Israeli institutions. Who’s entitled to these things? The olive tree farmer could care less about the shards laying there for centuries to come, and I also hated the idea of the annual Evangelical tours excavating on the land. I smuggled them through the Jordan border and fibbed that they’re shards from my grandmas pot I’m putting back together as they interrogated me. The officer was certain it was an artifact but his supervisor let me pass because he’d only cared about seizing weapons and drugs.
