This International Lifeguard Appreciation Day falls on the heels of a historic week of global media coverage surrounding a harrowing Santa Cruz ocean rescue—a moment that showed the world what we’ve known all along: open water lifeguards perform the high-stakes work of first responders every single day. Yet, at the federal level, lifeguards are still not officially recognized as first responders. A viral news cycle is powerful, but media attention fades quickly while lifeguards remain on the frontline performing specialized, high-risk emergency rescue work. We need to turn this temporary spotlight into permanent policy—and formal federal recognition is what these men and women have earned. 🚨 HOW YOU CAN HELP KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING 1️⃣ Support House Resolution 1188: Formal federal first responder status ensures that open water lifeguards receive the advocacy, resources, and recognition their lifesaving work deserves. Yesterday was one of the biggest days of the year for our Ocean Rescue team! 🇺🇸 Our region showed up in full force, bringing the energy, the spirit, and the dedication to keep the holiday fun and safe for everyone on the beach.
