Today is my sweet mother, Marta Valverde Salcedo‘s 90th birthday! I am so proud of her. She has been a shining light to our entire family - a faithful servant of God, a loving wife and a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. My heart is full of gratitude for the many blessings God has bestowed upon our family. Today, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, I want to say thank you, Jesus for healing my dear father, Fernando Salcedo. With his permission, I want to share his story.

My father had been struggling with swallowing since February of this year. After many doctor visits and tests in Southern California, he didn’t have any answers. Finally, near the end of June, my parents came up to Ukiah to attend my nephew’s fiancé‘s bridal shower. My mother felt impressed to call our good friend, Dr. Brian Hanson, gastroenterologist in Santa Rosa. Last-minute patient cancellations allowed my father to be seen right away on a Friday and by the following Monday, Dr. Hansen worked him in for an upper endoscopy. With a heavy heart, he reported to us that my father had a 6 cm tumor located at the bottom of his esophagus, and most likely cancerous. Further test confirmed its malignancy.

We were in shock! Due to the grace of God, within 3 1/2 weeks, my father was able to begin treatment. He received 28 treatments of radiation and 5 treatments of chemotherapy under the guidance of Dr. Henbing Wong, Oncologist and Dr. Jay Joseph, Radiation Oncologist in Ukiah, California. Fantastic doctors! It was a very difficult journey for him. These last five months have been full of emotions dealing with the fragility of life.

Through the stress, tears and fears, we have felt the love of family, friends, and God‘s protection over my father.

Last week we received the news that my father no longer has esophageal cancer! After a clean pet scan and a repeat upper endoscopy, the results showed no more signs of a tumor, biopsies taken were all clear – no cancer!

We are grateful to God for the great medical care he received here in Ukiah and for caring us through this season of life. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but today we can say, “Thank you Jesus!
