Among the many images and art works that serve as muses around the atelier, this is the one I keep coming back to. The image of the woman ‘la femme creole’ who commands presence with authority pride and elegance.

The “Femme Matador” in Creole culture in the French Caribbean, is a figure rooted in both historical costume and literary/social symbolism. She represents a strong, coquettish, and often dominant woman, sometimes associated with specific traditional attire, including complex headwear (“tét maré”) and rich, layered clothing.

Historically, the Matador referred to a stylish, commanding woman. The costume, or tenue de Matador, is an elaborate, traditional outfit featuring corsages, skirts, and petticoats (often in madras fabric), adorned in gold jewellery, reflecting pride and heritage. #guadeloupe #femmecréole by @salima.ali_
