This song appears on the opening track of L’Album d’or de la Biguine, and is a musical tribute to the women of Guadeloupe and their cultural traditions. The recording features traditional guadeloupe orchestra, with the renowned singer Manuela Pioche among its performers. Bigiuine is a dance music rooted in the French Caribbean particularly Guadeloupe and Martinique. Its lively syncopated rhythms reflect a rich blend of Caribbean traditions and influences from European dance music.

What makes “Nous les cuisinières” especially interesting is the way it connects music, women’s work, food and community identity. Biguine is often associated with dancing and festive gatherings, but songs like this also preserve the social history of Guadeloupe. The cooks’ sisterhood gives the piece a very specific local identity, while the 1966 recording carries that tradition to later generations.

Twenty-Fine.

I am so grateful to see another year, and this is the most excited I have been for a birthday, as I grow up I see more and more adults less excited to celebrate their birthdays but, when I pondered on why, I thought to myself: I am not just celebrating an occasional event I am celebrating the day I came into the earth and all the subsequent years I grow and make it around the sun 365 times to that day again! So amazing right! I had the best day doing all the things I love and created more core memories. In the middle of my defining decade I finally understand what taking creative control of my life looks like. Here’s to another year of being Sincerely Salima x 🥂
