. Jamie Hammill My World is Modular, 2017 Video (4m 57s) My World is Modular by Jamie Hammil (@hammillj ) offers a poetic engagement with materiality while reflecting on American cultural imperialism and soft power. Set against shifting backdrops, moving between characters and with a soundtrack that flows from pop-inflected auto-tuned vocals to resonant cinematic male voices—the work unfolds as a sly yet sincere portrait of how objects mediate cultural influence and meaning. by @salon.unit31
. Ty Locke Nanny State 92 x 92 x 72 cm Cigarette filters, thread, plastic table Ty Locke (@tylocke.art) uses cheap domestic items that hold personal significance from his upbringing and manipulates them while engaging with broader social commentaries around class and sexuality. In Nanny State he returns to his grandmother’s home—to the doilies which used to decorate her house and the act of rolling cigarettes. by @salon.unit31

. Anna Howard Pillow, 2024 Archival pigment print, plastic cups 74 x 49 x 9 cm In Pillow, a to-scale photograph of a used bed pillow hovers above the floor, supported by a temporary arrangement of plastic cups. This work forms part of Anna Howard’s (@a__howard ) personal reflection on domestic spaces and her ongoing interest in the printed surface and impermanent methods of display. The image itself is produced through an experimental darkroom process, in which a smartphone is inserted into the enlarger, disrupting traditional photographic methods by blending analogue and digital technologies. by @salon.unit31
. Ilona Balaga Untitled, 2024 Wall paint, readymade 18 x 23.5 cm Ilona Balaga's practice (@ilonabalaga) navigates the tension between the fleeting and the enduring, the organised and the spontaneous—engaging with themes of potential, destruction, and renewal. In Untitled, a found formal invitation is placed inside a brown cardboard envelope the artist received. The interior of the envelope—serving as the backdrop to the card—is painted with white emulsion wall paint, exploring the idea of ‘holding’ both as an act of containment and a state of suspension. by @salon.unit31
. Sam Meredith Bread & Butter, 2025 Thixotropic alkyd primer and oil paint on gifted off-square aluminium panels 64 x 55.5 x 5.5 cm each Sam Meredith’s (@sammeredith_ ) work highlights materials in states of misbehaviour or misuse. Two aluminium panels fabricated by the artist’s friend 1mm off-square from their intended specifications—are gifted to the artist. Meredith primes and paints them into bold colour blocks, leaving visible brushstrokes that underscore the tension between flaw and intention, process and resolution. by @salon.unit31

. Anaï Salem Fur Glove, 2025 Plaster, ready-made 14 x 13 x 11.5 cm Anai Salem (@anai_salem) works primarily with sculpture and installation, using found objects in unexpected ways that accentuate the body’s fragility. By combining materials from various domains of life, her works engage the senses and evoke a feeling of the uncanny and the bizarre. by @salon.unit31
. Yinon Avior Philipshon Facelift, 2011 - 2023 Metal frame, double-glass wooden frame, color prints 11 x 8.5 x 1 cm & 23 x 17 x 2 cm Yinon Avior Philipshon’s (@yinon.avior) work begins with a mass-produced utilitarian frame, which arrives with a printed demonstration of the object’s use - the type of photo one should be inserting alongside the measures. Treating this suggestive manual as instruction, he scans it and extracts the anonymous woman’s portrait, performing a digital-cosmetic surgery to adjust her posture and proportions, aligning the image to the frame’s prescribed size. In doing so, he animates the manual’s abstract idea—bringing the exemplary image to life. Avior Philipsohn’s practice is deeply informed by his upbringing in the 1990s, a period marked by dramatic technological shifts that unfolded alongside his own evolving experience of masculinity. The entanglement of these parallel developments—emerging sexual curiosity, physical labor, and mechanical innovation—forms a recurring undercurrent in his work, where personal narrative and industrial logic often collide. by @salon.unit31
. Kristian Alanson Bruce Tickling a Melted Leaf 2025 Oil on linen over panel 40 x 40 cm Through his paintings, Kristian Alanson Bruce (@kristian_alanson) explores the mechanisms of meaning-making. Using text and image, he examines the potential of these two distinct forms of language to create a web of associations that evokes shifting, momentary perceptions. His work offers a course of thinking rather than a fixed representation, inviting a viewing of the painting as something evolving and unfolding. The group exhibition soap-opera, continues this Saturday, July 26th 12-4, or by appointment until August 2nd. DM or email salon.unit31@gmail.com to schedule your visit. by @salon.unit31
