THE SALOON IS A DIVERSE NETWORK OF WOMAN IDENTIFYING ART PROFESSIONALS ACTIVE THROUGH LOCAL GROUPS IN A GROWING NUMBER OF CITIES WORLDWIDE
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
NICE TO MEET YOU #19 on “Caring, Queering, Curating” invited artists and curators from the SALOON Network to talk about their artistic, and curatorial strategies.

Today we introduce:

Genevieve Flavelle @genderweave @saloon.toronto

Title of her talk:
𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐳𝐞
What does it look like to curate specifically for LGBTQ2S+ audiences? Moving beyond exhibitions that introduce queer artists and art to general audiences, this talk considers how curators can create complex, resonant exhibitions that centre LGBTQ2S+ audiences, experiences, and ways of seeing.

Genevieve Flavelle is an independent curator, art historian, and artist based in Toronto. She holds a PhD in Art History from Queen’s University. Her research focuses on North American contemporary art, with particular attention to 2SLGBTQ+ artists and art histories. As an independent curator, Genevieve has organized exhibitions in galleries and artist-run centres across Canada. Her writing has appeared in art magazines, exhibition catalogues, and academic publications, including the Journal of Feminist Scholarship and The Routledge Companion to Art History and Feminisms. Her forthcoming curatorial project, An Archive of Queer Touch, will open at the McMaster Museum of Art in January 2027.

What do we hope to achieve through exhibitions? What kind of society do we want to help shape? Queer Curating can be a critical method for questioning institutional routines, normative expectations, and established attitudes. It aims to transform curatorial practices, collaboration, and exhibitions. But what does this actually mean for us as individual curators? How can our efforts and visions become lasting and sustainable?

5 years of SALOON Munich - Member Voices

Our anniversary celebration may be over, but the voices that shape SALOON Munich continue. Following our wonderful celebration last Friday, we are carrying on our Member Voices series and sharing more of the stories, ideas, and people behind our network.

Today, we are honoured to share the voice of Dr. Tina Sauerländer @tinissima, who founded the very first SALOON in Berlin in 2012 @saloon.network and laid the foundation for a network that now connects women in the arts across cities, countries, and generations:

“When I founded the very first SALOON in Berlin in 2012, my hope was to create a space where women working in the arts could come together to exchange ideas openly, privately, and with trust - a place to share experiences and insights that often remain unspoken in public.
Seeing SALOON Munich celebrate its 5th anniversary fills me with gratitude. That same sense of trust, generosity, and connection that brought us together in the beginning continues to unite us today across cities, countries, and generations - in Munich, as well as in all the other SALOON cities: Berlin, Brussels, Brno, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, London, Montreal, Paris, Prague, Toronto, and Vienna.”

Thank you, dear Tina, for creating the vision that started it all and for building a network that continues to grow, connect, and inspire.

✨ Cheers to 5 years of SALOON Munich ✨

Last Friday evening, we came together to celebrate five years of SALOON Munich - an unforgettable night filled with inspiring encounters, meaningful conversations, and wonderful energy.

A very special thank you to Fiona Seidler for so generously hosting us at the beautiful Koller Repräsentanz München and providing the perfect setting for this special occasion. We could not have wished for a more wonderful venue for our anniversary celebration.

We were truly overwhelmed by how many of you joined us. Our speed networking brought about so many new connections, inspiring conversations, and joyful moments - and the fantastic atmosphere carried us through the entire evening.

Looking back at how SALOON Munich has grown over the past five years into such a strong and vibrant network fills us with immense gratitude. A network where women support and inspire one another, share knowledge, create connections, and make each other more visible.
Thank you to everyone who made this evening so special and who continues to shape SALOON Munich into the community it is today.

Here’s to the next five years! 🥂✨

A rainy July day didn’t stop us! ☔

In July, we had the pleasure of visiting the NDR campus together with SALOON Hamburg member Andrea Völker and Branka de Veer. During the tour they carefully researched and developed, we learned so much about the history of broadcasting in Hamburg, the site’s architecture, and the NDR art collection.

A huge thank you to Andrea and Branka for their dedication, generosity, and the wealth of knowledge they shared with us. We highly recommend this tour!
We rounded off the afternoon with relaxed conversations over picnic in the NDR canteen.

5 years of SALOON Munich - Member Voices

To mark our 5th anniversary, we are sharing voices from within our network - reflections from members who help shape and strengthen SALOON Munich.

We are happy to begin this series with our lovely member Dr. Carola Schenk @carola_muc:

“Since 2022, I have been part of SALOON Munich and have had the chance to reconnect with and meet so many inspiring, committed women from a wide range of fields in the arts. The exchange, the mutual support, and our shared enthusiasm for art make this network something truly special to me. A huge thank you to the founders, Christiane Gorzalka @christiane_gorzalka and Eva Lengler @eva_lengler! You have created exactly what had been missing in Munich for women in the arts: a space for connection, exchange, learning from one another, mutual inspiration, and a warm, open sense of community.”

Thank you, dear Carola, for your words and for being part of our network.

Over the next few days, we will share more member voices as we look ahead to celebrating 5 years of SALOON Munich this month 🥳

In June, we visited the current exhibition in the 40ft container. “ZUGUNRUHE” is taking place from 5 June to 19 July 2026 as part of the Triennial of Photography.

SALOON Hamburg member Viktoria Rochambeau, together with her colleague Vilja Gunzelmann and the artist Oksana Yushko, invited us to an artist talk. Many thanks for the in-depth insights into your collaboration, curatorial decisions and artistic strategy – a fascinating conversation in an extraordinary venue!

International SALOON Meeting during the preview days of Manifesta 16 Ruhr✨

Despite the extreme heat—and with several pre-openings already behind us—we gathered on Sunday for a guided tour with Manifesta curator Leonie Herweg, who co-curated the two Essen churches, St. Gertrud and St. Marien, together with René Block.

Leonie gave us wonderful insights into the exhibition and the featured works, including pieces by Ayşe Erkmen and Donya Nasseri. Thank you, dear Leonie, for taking so much time with us and for the inspiring and in-depth conversation about Manifesta and its vision.

After the tour, we cooled down and recharged at Capobianco, the lovely Italian restaurant just around the corner, before spontaneously heading to St. Marien to experience Mira Mann's sound performance.

It was a truly wonderful day, and we were delighted to meet and connect with inspiring colleagues from other SALOON chapters. Thank you all for making it so special!
