During the Saloon’s summer break, our board member and artist Beate Gärtner was involved in an exciting project at Manifesta 16 Ruhr. In early October, she presented her wonderful video installation *Mise en place*, which she developed as part of the project **SACRED KITCHEN**.✨

We were delighted by her invitation and enjoyed gathering in a small, intimate group to learn more about the project, discuss Manifesta and biennials more broadly, and exchange ideas.

As another Manifesta venue was located close to beate’s exhibition space, we took the opportunity to start our visit there: **Markuskirche in Essen**, featuring works by Augustus Serapinas, Sara Bichão and Lilli Lake.

SALOON Berlin member Nancy Görlach presents her work >>Rough Ground<< in a solo show during October in a former gatekeeper’s house at GATE TO, a permanent exhibition space on the grounds of the Alte Münze.

Glasses from the former GDR, soil, dried grass and old clay make a brief stop at a place that once served as a passage and a checkpoint. What interests her is the moment after: What stays behind? What disappears? What can still be held on to?

Someone brought something here.
Someone put something down.
Someone may have sat down.
Someone left again.
Maybe someone will come back.

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the medienkunstverein (mkv) looks behind the sleek surfaces of the displays in our everyday lives and asks: What actually happens while we swipe, tap and scroll? Digital infrastructures have long permeated our social and private lives, yet their underlying processes remain hidden to most users. At the same time, they shape our present, from automated communication and algorithmic filters to surveillance and the data economy. The exhibition HIDDEN PROCESSES makes these structures accessible, rendering the invisible visible and thus tangible.

Better late than never: a recap we've owed you since June, when SALOON Praha welcomed @saloonbrno for a full day in Strašnice and Vršovice.

We started at Bubahof and its community space Prostor Olga @bubahof_olga, where artist Dita Lamačová, who initiated the platform, showed us around. In the Bubahof studios we saw comics by Anna Vohralíková @vohralikova.anna, bobbin laces by Katerina Forejtova @katschkagram and works by Petra Hudcová @petraaaq. After lunch near Kubánské náměstí, we continued to the Koh-i-noor building, open as part of Open studios Praha @otevrene_ateliery_praha : studio visits with Linda Kemrová @vykalinda and our member Tereza Dvořáková, and a conversation with Petra Widžová @pewidzova, co-founder of the festival.

The day ended at @platforma15_prague, where painter Gabriela Slaninková @ela_slaninkova guided us through her exhibition It Must Be the Weather on its closing day.

Thank you to Dita, Linda, Tereza, Petra and Gabriela for your time and openness, and to SALOON Brno for making the trip.

On Monday we met for our first SALOON Praha gathering after the summer break, this time as a studio visit.

We visited painter Kateřina Rafaelová @katerinarafaelova in her studio at @the_house.art, an art gallery/hub in a modernist villa in Prague-Střešovice.

Kateřina spoke about her creative process and the strong influence her painting studies in Cluj have had on her work. She introduced a new cycle taking shape during her residency, which deals with European reminiscences and a disillusionment with the present. We also talked about her work with light: the figures seem to glow from within and, together with her colour palette, evoke an almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

Kateřina Rafaelová (*1994) is a painter based in Prague. She graduated from Painting Studio 1 at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology, under Vasil Artamonov and Marie Štindlová, with study stays at the Universitatea de Arte și Design in Cluj, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and later in Berlin. Working mainly in figurative painting, she builds pictorial worlds from figures, landscapes and interiors, between personal imagination, memory and latent stories. Familiar, everyday situations meet uncertainty, ambivalence and psychological tension; her paintings rest on hidden connections and an atmosphere that resists a single reading.

5 years of SALOON Munich - Member Voices

Today, we are sharing the voice of artist Heike Dempster @heikedempster, who reflects on returning to Germany after many years in the United States and finding her place within Munich’s art scene:

“After spending many years in the United States, returning to Germany and finding my way into Munich’s art scene was not always easy. During that time, the network and community of SALOON Munich were especially important to me. Time and again, I feel deeply grateful to the board and our fellow members. I greatly value the way we share our collective knowledge and bring together so many committed women within our art community.”

5 years of SALOON Munich - Member Voices

Our anniversary celebration may be over, but the voices that shape SALOON Munich continue. Following our wonderful celebration last Friday, we are carrying on our Member Voices series and sharing more of the stories, ideas, and people behind our network.

Today, we are honoured to share the voice of Dr. Tina Sauerländer @tinissima, who founded the very first SALOON in Berlin in 2012 @saloon.network and laid the foundation for a network that now connects women in the arts across cities, countries, and generations:

“When I founded the very first SALOON in Berlin in 2012, my hope was to create a space where women working in the arts could come together to exchange ideas openly, privately, and with trust - a place to share experiences and insights that often remain unspoken in public.
Seeing SALOON Munich celebrate its 5th anniversary fills me with gratitude. That same sense of trust, generosity, and connection that brought us together in the beginning continues to unite us today across cities, countries, and generations - in Munich, as well as in all the other SALOON cities: Berlin, Brussels, Brno, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, London, Montreal, Paris, Prague, Toronto, and Vienna.”

✨ Cheers to 5 years of SALOON Munich ✨

Last Friday evening, we came together to celebrate five years of SALOON Munich - an unforgettable night filled with inspiring encounters, meaningful conversations, and wonderful energy.

A very special thank you to Fiona Seidler for so generously hosting us at the beautiful Koller Repräsentanz München and providing the perfect setting for this special occasion. We could not have wished for a more wonderful venue for our anniversary celebration.

We were truly overwhelmed by how many of you joined us. Our speed networking brought about so many new connections, inspiring conversations, and joyful moments - and the fantastic atmosphere carried us through the entire evening.

Looking back at how SALOON Munich has grown over the past five years into such a strong and vibrant network fills us with immense gratitude. A network where women support and inspire one another, share knowledge, create connections, and make each other more visible.

SALOON Berlin board member Elisa Duca presents a new temporary installation at the Karl-Marx-Straße U-Bahn station in Berlin:
DREAMS OF VENDING MACHINES is on view in the display case at the U-Bahn station until August 2, interwoven into the messy cityscape of busy Neukölln!
What do vending machines dream of when they no longer have to function? What kind of city would emerge if it were imagined by objects rather than designed by humans?The installation consists of two large-scale AI-generated images that transport common vending machines - like those found on Berlin’s U-Bahn platforms - into an uncanny, dreamcore world inhabited by giant squid-like beings, vegetables, and the packaging of nonexistent products. The familiar becomes strange, inviting viewers to imagine the dream life of everyday objects.
In these dreams, the machines reject their role as silent infrastructures of consumption. They gently queer the public space they usually disappear into, claiming agency and becoming visible on their own terms.
Soft, fluid forms disrupt the station’s rigid geometries, opening cracks in narratives of order, efficiency, and control. Installed in the everyday environment of the metro station, the images create a subtle glitch in daily life, shifting overlooked objects from the logic of utility into a realm of ambiguity and possibility.
