A Community Experience Honoring Grief Thru Gatherings, Rituals & Art 🌺
🎤 Singing Our Grief 💧 Every 3rd Friday ➡️ Next one: Dec 20
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Our annual community processional takes place next month!

Together we honor the shared weight of sorrow through movement, music, and ritual. Rooted in collective care, this gathering invites participants to walk together in remembrance, solidarity, and the sacred act of grieving in public.

Grief does not look the same for everyone. It may be expressed through silence, song, movement, tears, conversation, prayer, art, memory, or simply the choice to show up. This gathering welcomes the full range of those experiences. We invite people of all ages, racial and cultural identities, genders, sexualities, faiths, abilities, and relationships to loss. We welcome you wherever you are in your grief, whether it is silent and still, or loud and moving.

We ask everyone to help create a space where grief is treated with dignity.

On Sunday, we were deeply honored to co-host @salttrailsphilly ‘s fourth annual Grief Processional at The Thread at Vernon Park. Joined by the Threshold Singers, we walked Francis Weller’s Five Gates of Grief, represented by the five entrances of Vernon Park. We shared stories, memories, and pain, we sang, we wailed, and we honored the land. And we witnessed and we encircled one another as we mourned, ensuring that no matter what we were going through we knew we were not alone.

There is so much to say…

And yet so much of it is still steeping in the heart. Breathing in and with the beauty we created and witnessed. Sitting with the communal bowl of sorrows in which we shared our tears.

So for now…GRATITUDE.

And a deep bow of thanks to the Philadelphia Threshold Singers for accompanying us with their exquisite voices today.

The rain is expected to be out of here in time for our processional tomorrow. We look forward to gathering with you by the water.

Thanks to Salt Trails crew member @moonvinegrief for this helpful post.

Here are a few things to know before joining the Grief Processional: You don’t need to bring anything, share anything, or participate in one particular way. You’re welcome to walk, pause, sit, listen, connect, take breaks, or stay near the gathering area.

Bring water, comfortable clothing (or wear your grief!), weather protection, and whatever helps you feel supported. You may also bring a photograph, flower, written remembrance, or small offering—but simply bringing yourself is enough. Take a look at the Salt Trails blog for accessibility supports that are available on-site.

Saturday, October 17, 1–3 p.m. at Race Street Pier. The rain date is Sunday, October 18 and will announced on the @salttrailsphilly page if we are going to utilize it.

What does it mean to wear your grief?

For some, it may be a patch with a name or phrase. It may be a loved one’s shirt, jewelry, or another treasured object. It may be a color, a texture, flowers, handmade adornments, or something that only makes sense to you. It might mean symbols like tears, religious iconography, beings from nature, etc.

There is no single right way to express grief—and you do not need to wear anything at all. Your grief may be visible, subtle, private, changing, or beyond words.

For this year’s Carrying Our Grief community processional, we re-invite you to wear or carry what your grief calls for, with care for the cultures and traditions that are not your own. Draw from your own memories, relationships, and experiences rather than imitating sacred symbols or mourning practices from another community. Draw from the brilliance of the many expressions of grief we have witnessed and worn together in year’s past.

Join us October 17 from 1–3 p.m. at Race Street Pier in Philadelphia. Rain date: October 18.

The 15th annual @blackstarfest opens one week from today, running August 6-9 at various Philadelphia venues.

“Homegoing,” a collaborative musical tribute by filmmaker Julie Dash and operatic bass-baritone Davóne Tines, will be one of the short films screened on opening day as part of “Lamentations: Navigating Grief into Comfort,” the shorts program taking place at 11:30 am in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center.

“Homegoing” was created in remembrance of the Emanuel Nine. Through voice, image, and ritual, the film honors lives taken during Bible study at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015.

Salt Trails is honored to be a screening partner for “Lamentations,” which explores through several short films how we move forward after the death of a loved one.

Join us in Philly or tune-in online around the globe for this powerful program of films from Black, Brown, and Indigenous artists, panels, and of course, parties. Get your all access or virtual pass: blackstarprojects.org/festival

To get your tickets to this screening, use the code screeningpartner15 at checkout!

Thank you to Maggie Dougherty of @chestnuthilllocal for this beautiful feature on Singing Our Grief.

As Salt Trails member @priscilla_tennant shares in this interview, “everybody is dealing with [grief]…So, this is a beautiful opportunity to come together to say, ‘I’m not alone.’ I do think there’s no better way to feel close to someone than hearing their stories of heartbreak.”

Link to read the full article in our bio.

We’re taking an August break but Singing Our Grief will be back the 3rd Friday in September.

We’re getting excited for opening day of @blackstarfest Aug. 6. Join us at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre for “The Prophet,” a haunting black-and-white film from first-time feature director Ique Langa. “The Prophet” tells the story of a Mozambican pastor who begins practicing witchcraft to bolster a dwindling congregation as he grapples with his own crisis of faith. Shot over the course of nine years in the rural village of Manjacaze, it explores the clash between postcolonial Christianity and folk spirituality.

Salt Trails is honored to be a screening partner for this film.

Passes are now on sale for the 15th annual @blackstarfest! Explore the packed film list, grab your passes, and join in four days of powerful films, panels, parties, good energy, and community.
