Our annual community processional takes place next weekend 🖤 Together we honor the shared weight of sorrow through movement, music, and ritual. Rooted in collective care, this gathering invites participants to walk together in remembrance, solidarity, and the sacred act of grieving in public. Grief does not look the same for everyone. It may be expressed through silence, song, movement, tears, conversation, prayer, art, memory, or simply the choice to show up. This gathering welcomes the full range of those experiences. We invite people of all ages, racial and cultural identities, genders, sexualities, faiths, abilities, and relationships to loss. We welcome you wherever you are in your grief, whether it is silent and still, or loud and moving. We ask everyone to help create a space where grief is treated with dignity. 💧Sixth Annual Grief Processional 🗓️Saturday, October 17, 2026, 1–3 p.m. [Rain date: Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 1–3 p.m.] 📍Race Street Pier, Race Street and North Columbus Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19106 🪻Free to attend (donations welcome) 💀You are invited to “wear your grief,” however you interpret doing so. Since my heart is both heavy and full of song today, I am moved to share this again, recorded this summer when the @salttrailsphilly monthly “singing through our grief“ event was held at the Cherry Street pier. It’s a little hard to hear, because I was literally competing with the sounds of planes, trains, and automobiles as we gathered under the Ben Franklin Bridge along the Delaware river. I wrote this song four weeks after after I lost my brother, only sibling, to an entirely unexpected suicide. His name was Jimmy D, he was 68 years old and he left us April 22, 2026. Come be held by these waters with us this Friday, June 19, 7-8:30p for a very special 🎶 Singing Our Grief 💦 at the @cherrystreetpier . We’ll ask that the whales hear our songs and feel the expression of our grief as an offering to Mother Earth, as they 🎶 travel down the Delaware River into the bay and out into the Atlantic Ocean. If you’ve been to Singing Our Grief, you’ve heard me invoke the spiritual power of the Delaware River/ Lenapewihittuck or Lenape Sipu which is the longest un-dammed river east of the Mississippi. So that she may help us un-dam the rivers of life within us. We at @salttrailsphilly are very excited that we get to sing this month next to this mighty river as part of @roomforgriefphl and it had me thinking of this beautiful augmented reality exhibit by @austencamilleart I Discovered by the Cherry St Pier 2 years ago. Here are the words from the exhibit board : “The river in front of you and its tributary on the other side of the city, the Schuylkill River, are tidal. Twice a day, Philadelphia’s banks shift by 6-8 feet, and water from the ocean mingles with freshwater from upriver. The city, bounded by these rivers, is held by the ocean. As you watch the augmented reality, you will see water pushed and pulled by the tides, by the moon. The connections between this place and the deep ocean are carried into view. Someday in the near future (by the year 2080), sea level rise indicates that the ocean will continue to submerge the banks of the city (by 24-38”). When this place was named Pennsylvania, there were more roots to hold the riverbanks in place; the latter part of the word, sylvania, means ‘from the forest’. These old growth forests had many other names before they were logged for farmland, for cityland. Many of the white pines became boats, set to sail across the ocean. (Continued in comments 👇

One year since the Philly Death and Arts Festival and we are still in awe of what a magical weekend it was. The art was stunning. The death was educational. We grieved together, we had long conversations together, we built a mandala together, we sang together, all under trees and above the graves of so many. Meanwhile, we are cooking up good things for the next one...

It's really happening 🙃 100+ Artists and Performers are taking over Cherry Street Pier next month and building a whole world to honor our grief. It has been an honor and a joy to get to know so many creative individuals, unified by experiences of loss, who are intent on shouldering bereavement as a community. We are so excited to open the doors to this immersive and interactive experience and share our calendar of events with you. ☘️ Today, I can’t help but think of these waters (in Wicklow Mountains National Park)—and the 💧streams of wisdom 💧flowing from my ancestors…From my last trip to the 🧚 Motherland - Ireland 💚 , in May 2018–especially as I prepare for two gatherings this week devoted to our inner and outer waters. 🌊 Friday, March 20, 7p💧Singing Our Grief with @salttrailsphilly 📍 Chestnut Hill United Church, Philadelphia 💧 Sunday, March 22, 11a 🌊 Cantoalagua (Sing to the Water) – #WorldWaterDay Community Event with @camaraderieambler in Amber, PA (link in bio to register) It was the waters—and the ancestors—that led me to my first community grief ritual in the fall of 2018: five days with the late African shaman, Malidoma Somé.🫠 In a divination with Malidoma a year prior, he said: “It’s no wonder you are coming to me about grief.” As he looked at the pieces on the divination cloth, most had landed in the water section.He said this showed: “You are in alignment with a frequency guiding you toward cleansing and purification. And you are devoted to that because there are ancestors supporting you in this process.” Truth tears flowed. He also told me not to forget about the leprechauns. 😆 And then—in the airport on my way to Atlanta in February 2019—I discovered @cantoalagua I knew immediately I had to bring it to Philly. It was also in Atlanta that keening—the ancient Irish art of lament—began moving through me in a way I could not ignore. And I kept following that thread. In March 2021, I began Cantoalagua in Philly. In May 2021, I received an invitation from my @thishallowedwilderness to join in her vision of a grief processional—which became @salttrailsphilly ! If you, too, feel called by the waters—by your ancestors—to tend to and honor the streams within and around us… I invite you to join me this weekend, in community. The waters are calling.

We gather because community and ritual are among the more potent medicines for navigating this passage of upheaval and uncertainty. No one turned away for lack of funds. There is a small parking lot behind the church, as well as street parking. Parking is also available at the Women’s Center at Chestnut Hill Hospital across the street. The church is about a 7-minute walk from the Chestnut Hill East rail line.
