Passages Season 5 begins with a showcase of the wonderful, groundbreaking Philadelphia-based label @lobbyarteditions

In autumnal fashion, we’re pleased to present a night of folk Americana ambient drone alongside experimentation and improvisation at its finest, featuring live sets from two artists who use the pedal steel at the core of their instrumentation - Old Saw [ @henry___birdsey , 1/2 of Tongue Depressor, Vermont] and @sam_____wenc [Lobby Art Editions co-founder, Philadelphia]

Starting off the night with a 2-hour DJ set is our friend Cyrus Moon [ @hotelsmotels ] host of ‘Belly Music’ on @particlefm and manager/curator of @soundloungepercy

The inimitable Passages experience is once again visually designed and directed by our creative collaborators at @klipcollective , along with audio wizardry by Alex Tebbs Mitchell [ @tebbs64 ]

On September 24, we’ll come together in coziness and community for a special gathering celebrating resonant strings of many kinds. Each of these performers plays with a sensitivity to their chosen instrument’s rich histories while approaching their craft with a distinctly personal touch. Bring a friend, settle in, and revel in the early-autumn glow of warmth and creativity.

Nathan Salsburg is a curator and peerless fingerstyle guitarist from Louisville, KY whose albums draw power from his deep understanding of various strains of vernacular music, an embrace of experimental compositional techniques, and his brilliant gift for melodic songcraft. He is a master interpreter who has reshaped Herbrew psalms and Lungfish songs with equal ingenuity and reverence. He has collaborated extensively with James Elkington, Will Oldham, Joan Shelley, and various other heroes of inventive contemporary folk music. Few artists so elegantly express our formative goal of tracing sonic resonances through history, and then sounding them boldly into the now moment, as Nathan.

We’ve long admired Sam Wenc’s ability to harness the expansive potential of the pedal steel guitar; the way he uses its lush tone and its slow decay, its unique harmonic configurations, the way chords can melt before your ears and reform anew. His latest album on his own Lobby Art Editions, Language at an Angle, retains the flamelike intensity of improvisation with a focused, devotional quality. This set will be a journey.

Amadou Kouyate will be opening the evening with a set of music for the 21-string kora. Kouyate, who has recorded and performed with Yasmin Williams, is the 150th generation of his family of Manding Diali, oral historians and musicians of West Africa. Every time we’ve seen him perform we’ve been taken by the playful serenity in his playing and reminded that joy is the greatest keeper of tradition.
