Passages is tonight! Advance tickets are still available through the link in our bio and we anticipate having some door tickets available. When doors open at 7pm, our dear friend Cyrus Moon will welcome you with a 2-hour DJ set. We’ve been sharing and talking deeply about music with Cyrus for a years, and we’re delighted to welcome them into the labyrinth for the very first sounds of Passages Season 5. Cyrus is a seasoned DJ, musician, and artist with more than 10 years of experience behind the decks. Born and raised in Portland, OR, Cyrus carries with them the organic and hypnotic melancholy that life in the Pacific Northwest fosters. Since 2022 Cyrus has hosted their no rules radio broadcast, Belly Music along with frequent guests on San Diego based DIY internet radio station Particle.FM. In Philly, they are currently working as the Programming Director at the Percy Sound Lounge where they focus on spotlighting underground artists through their weekly Thursday open format night, Spatial Awareness with friend and collaborator Cubby. Their expression in all things is informed by spirituality, interactions with the natural world, the vitality of queer community, imagining abolitionist futures, and the conviction that deep listening is the act through which human connection is most readily formed.

Live ~ Old Saw | Sam Wenc // DJ ~ Cyrus Moon // Visuals ~ Klip Collective Artist Feature ~ Old Saw Old Saw formed in 2021 as a recording project that evolved into a collective of revolving members from various corners of the northeastern United States. They make music with organs, fiddles, tape loops, pedal steel, hurdy-gurdy, banjo, harmonicas, and bells. Old Saw records and represses seem to vanish as fast as they appear. We’re big fans at GC. You may have heard us listening to ‘Country Tropic’ on repeat in the shop. Suffice to say, we’re anxiously awaiting this performance in the labyrinth. “...gorgeous fourth and final album from Old Saw, the American Primitive project of Tongue Depressor’s Henry Birdsey, riffing on the classic Takoma paradigm with additional ferric washes and layered instrumental drones, huge recommendation if yr into Bruce Langhorne’s ‘The Hired Hand’ or classic work by Daniel Lanois, Laraaji, Pelt, Stars Of The Lid, State River Widening.” - Boomkat on ‘The Wringing Cloth’ “’...evokes an ambience of prayer-like solemnity that celebrates something decidedly terrestrial, what the label describe as “a rusted and granular shadow world where the dive bar meets the divine.” It recalls one of those junkyard shrines built by some sincere eccentric, improbably wonderful forms of weathered stone and scrap metal standing like totems to an unrecognised religion rooted in the earth around us.” - Various Small Flames on ‘Country Tropics’ “Contrary to the often-used ambient tag, Old Saw shows up here in a markedly active and sculpted form — manipulating, unwinding, and pivoting with a strange and warped precision. What has always been uncanny about this music is that it arrives in a state at once familiar and obscured, like a memory weighed down with sensory information but no identifying details to place it. The label has lived many different lives, but has always been oriented around producing heartfelt and expansive releases from artists working at the intersections of musical and artistic forms. It has been a true delight and honor to work with the artists on the label and countless hours have been poured into the details of putting their work out to a public audience. OUT TODAY ~~ Enthalpy by Ka Baird and Chris Ryan Williams, an incisive exploration of pressure and motion animated by the duo’s shared thrill at approaching the sonic unknown. Available now on LP and digital formats 💨💨💨 Enthalpy is often felt in the body as much as it reverberates within the ears. We’re tossed from side to side, made to shoulder the impact of detonating electronics, absorbing these sounds with the feet, gut, and crown. Baird reaches into the back of their throat for guttural growls, and we can almost feel the scratch. At times the electronics obscure the acoustic sound source, and sometimes make it hyperreal. Flutters of lip and tongue slither over the listener’s ear, and sustained tones become a dense fog, pushing on other kinds of visceral, emotional pressure points. As we tread the border of the synthesthetic, it’s a reminder of the physical nature of sound, that the space between our ears and the speakers is its own enthalpic system of energy conduction. We’re grateful to have this music enter the world at this moment, to push beyond expectations, to exemplify the spirit of creative collaboration in such profound ways. Jeffrey Lependorf, James Ilgenfritz, Sam Wenc, and Eric Keenaghan will perform on Saturday October 3rd at Verbatim, via John Cage Trust. The quartet will perform excerpts of John Cage’s “Mureau” with “Ryoanji”.
