A book doesn’t entirely exist in one place – it overlaps past and present, linking otherwise separate times, places and people. I am drawn to their paper, full of yesterdays and memory, yellowed, marked and thumbed. Not in a nostalgic way, but more as a means for time travel – to tie myself to the object and its’ accumulative contexts.
My work is not always authored only by me, I seek opportunities to lose control over decisions – book paper or covers already come with an absent presence; writer, publisher, binder, owner, reader – who have already left their mark, my marks follow on and add my moments in time to the palimpsest. by @sam_lock_art

Sam Lock’s 2-part constructions strikingly hold their own in INSIDE|OUT. We are pleased to present two new works ‘Names to Things’ and ‘Where all Change’ in this exciting group exhibition at The Cot. Abstraction is the language of the hidden; the world within rather than without. Sam Lock has developed a distinctive visual language that positions painting not as an image-making exercise, but as an excavation of time, memory and perception. Working through a physical cycle of construction and erasure, the surface is transformed into a site where traces of past actions remain embedded, finding that point where the works oscillate between presence and absence, gesture and silence, revealing painting as both an object and a record of lived experience.

Educated in Fine Art and Art History at the University of Edinburgh and influenced by studies of archaeology and historical stratification in Rome, Lock approaches the canvas as a layered terrain or forum rather than a fixed image. His works evoke the physical and psychological accumulation of time, where marks emerge, disappear and re-emerge in a dynamic process of concealment and revelation. This archaeological process aligns his practice with broader questions surrounding memory, materiality and the instability of meaning. To see these fabulous pieces in the flesh, do come down to the beautiful Weald of Kent at The Cot, Weavers Cot, Biddenden TN27 8JB where we are open from Friday-Sunday 10.30-4pm and at other times by appointment.
