I think I loaded the film into my camera the wrong way, which means the photos I took from our recent little farm getaway were a complete bust! Finally got the frozen clutch to let go on the old bug. Had the engine running for a while, but clutch was stuck solid. I’d tried to bump it in gear a few times but she wouldn’t let go. In the end I put it on jack stands and could work it against the handbrake until it came free. Smooth as now! The reason the back suspension looks strange and on such and angle is just how the suspension is on these old cars when they’ve come off stands, a few rolls back and forth and it’ll settle back to normal. #vw #classiccars #vwbeetle by @sam_webster

And on today’s episode of “This house is doing everything possible to fight me”, this little brass screw which holds in a casement latch, decided to shear half the head off under minimal pressure. Using a little chisel I was able to make enough of a groove to back it out and replace it, but man does every little job turn into a project all of its own.

I’m not usually one to do this, but I just wanted to put it out there how proud I am of Annie for pushing through this last phase of painting the outside of the house. It takes countless hours, attention to detail, and patience I could only dream to have. She doesn’t complain, no matter how bitter, cold and windy it is, she just cracks on to get the job done. by @sam_webster

Back to the lab again, yo. Time to finish this house, and it starts with getting the last of the outside painted so it’s all sealed up.

It’s a long process, lots of sanding, punching, priming, gluing and filling. Here the boards are sanded with 40 grit on a random orbital sander hooked up to a vac with a HEPA filter, nail heads wire brushed, punched in and then spot primed twice with metal primer, lastly, any cracks/weakness in the boards are glued.

Next will be exterior timber filler, 120 grit final sand, then two coats of primer (24 between coats to lock in the tannin), and two coats of topcoat. Yes, I wear a harness and respirator.

Found this 1 cent coin while working on the Mini today. It’s cool because the car is approx 1972 and the coin in 1973, so perhaps it’s been there almost the whole life of the car! Bit of bar keepers friend and it looks freshly minted too! #coin #1973 by @sam_webster

My beautiful wife Annie organised an awesome weekend away for my birthday in Brisbane. I love jungle tiki bar’s so Annie took me to @jungle_bar on Friday and then surprised me with tickets to @ministryofsoundclassical at Riverstage last night! Not as cool as the cars, but had to give the generator a check over coming in to storm season. Turns out there was some water in the fuel! Explains why I had a hard time starting it lately, better off sorted now than during a blackout. #stormseason #generator by @sam_webster

Finally sorted out all the fuel system on the 1966 VW, she now revs for the first time in 30 years! It was a blocked main jet I missed yesterday, @barkeepersfriend to the rescue again - still learning about these old Solex carbs.
