On February 25th at 9:30 PM, my mom passed away. This came at the tail end of a fast decline from dementia, which we became aware of in about 2018. I’m grateful that my dad and I were able to be with her as she took her last breath. We held her hands and told her how loved she was and that she was free to go in peace. This was the most painful moment of my life.

A lot of you know how much I loved her, as is evidenced in the many songs I’ve written during this process about her. I had been afraid of losing her my entire life, because she was my world and my biggest supporter and my best friend above all. She was so kind and giving, empathetic, funny, loving, SO smart, so witty. She was the best mom I could have asked for, and a large part of me died with her.

I will always be reminded of her by the many ways she has rubbed off on me. When I help others. When I make jokes in the face of darkness. When I listen to 70s music in the sunshine.

She deserved so much more than the ending she got, but I’m so grateful to my father for caring for her and making sure she was never alone or afraid. She never had to go to a memory care facility or someplace that was unfamiliar. She died in her home of 36 years being held by family. I am so thankful for that.

I was so fortunate to have her. I wish it had been longer. I wish I had been able to take her to Italy like we talked about. I wish I would have been able to have more adventures and more laughs and more hugs. I wish I didn’t have to lose my person so soon.

Thank you to my friends who have held me during my biggest nightmare. She would be grateful to all of you for that.
