Sundial, 2024
Items gathered along Jersey’s coastline

During my time in Jersey I ran a sundial workshop with the amazing @youthfulminds_jersey collecting items along the beach and got thinking about our place in time, space, and circadian rhythms.

Elements from this workshop and other sundials I made along the coastal path were then reintroduced in a small sundial sitting in the gallery window.

I documented my walk around Jersey for The Land Us | La Tèrre et Nous through temporary sculptures, drawings, writing, and field and film recordings. Here’s a collection of short videos from wildlife cams, and phone and camera footage documenting a small fragment of Jersey’s incredible coast.

Final week to see The Land and Us | La Tèrre et Nous @arthousejersey curated and produced by @alexandermourant and @karenleroyharris

Throughout the space is my piece Jersey Coastal Path, a large walkable path reflecting my own map of Jersey that was made whilst walking. Each part corresponds to different terrains found along the Jersey coast, such as sand for the sand dunes on the west coast, and gravelly soil and steep steps on the north coast.

The Jersey Coastal Path branding, a small hand pointing the way forward and often carved in stone, became a series of friendly gestures supporting my walk around the island. Peregrines, gulls, choughs and cormorants nestled on rocks throughout the coast. Cormorants especially, felt like statues or landmarks, sitting perfectly still, drying their wings.

On show at The Land and Us | La Tèrre et Nous, @arthousejersey curated by @alexandermourant and @karenleroyharris until 5th May.

Sam Carvosso is an artist working across sculpture, drawing, video, and installation with a research-led focus. His artwork ‘Jersey Coastal Path’ is a reflection of his time spent in the landscape during a five-day residency and hike observing, listening, recording, writing and making temporary artworks. You can follow his journey in a pathway installation throughout the gallery with a series of sculptures developed from his observations. This includes moss and plaster sculptures where he worked with Highlands Arts School to cast directly from nature and a sundial influenced by a temporal artwork created with Youthful Minds (Mind Jersey).

Walking the Jersey Coast Path for The Land and Us research @arthousejersey made me consider lots of things but mostly the movement of the sun, of time and place, my shadow acting as a sundial along the cliffs. As part of a series of temporary sculptures that responded to the landscape, I collected objects each day along my walk and when the time felt right I would make a small sundial to mark the time I was there 🌞 by @samcarvosso

Back in September I had the best time walking the Jersey coast path as part of my research for @arthousejersey project The Land and Us | La Tèrre et Nous. Throughout the 50 miles I documented and responded to the landscape through temporary sculptures, drawings, field recordings, photos and videos. The walk gave me loads of time to think and not think, to just wake up and walk, to make whilst travelling, and the very essential time needed to look and listen in the landscape.

A few years ago I saw a sheep wandering back to it’s flock, overgrown and covered in sticks and branches. Where had it been and for how long? I’ve been thinking about this sheep for ages, and about being, getting, and feeling lost.
