This was inspired by an epiphany I had a couple years ago 🦋🗝

I’ve struggled with being transparent because social media offers an intimidatingly broad exposure that made me become more guarded about my personal life. However, allowing yourself to be transparent, or the most unashamed version of yourself, feels like the route toward living a more authentic and fulfilling life. 💯

There is a weight that comes from lying to yourself or others about your wants and needs. Being transparent may seem frank or abrasive at times, but will allow you to stay true to your personal intentions. This will invite the interactions or relationships you truly want, rather than letting complacency gather strands of obligation along the way.

I’m thrilled with how this piece came out! I was able to bring together a refined structure with some loose elements. The butterfly represents a vulnerability waiting to be released. The key is conducting yourself transparently, opening up a world of possibility.😊

See how hard I stamped that mf?

The making of A Wink from the Past. Damn time lapse almost made it look easy. This piece was done over the course of 5 months without a shop space to work in. So, it was done outside, partially on a rickety children’s table.

A tribute to our human ancestors asking what they’d want to tell us today. This carving is a combination of Mayan and emoji inspiration, bringing ancient into the modern. The wink represents the secrets of our past yet to be uncovered, because somehow it seems we lost some knowledge along the way.

People ask me “what do you use?” for woodwork or carving, as if there is one tool. I used everything at my disposal for this one. This project started with a jointer to get a rough beam flat on all sides, a circular saw, glue and clamps, and a hand saw just to get the raw shape together. Then I used a router to achieve the different depths, chisels, a Dremel, files, a die grinder, and a ton of sand paper.

The process of refinement seemed endless, but I’m so happy to see this one done! 😊❤️😜 by @samhotchwork

A Wink to the Past: a new piece I just finished up!

A mix of ancient and modern, this was inspired by Mayan relief carvings, specifically the mayan calendar, and the wink emoji. It’s meant to convey a “those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it” message and maybe a nod to ancient aliens. 😜

Finding time to work on it here and there over the last 5 months has been such an enjoyable and meditative escape. It started with an old beam (still not sure about species) that I chopped up, planed down, and glued together. The process of refinement with wood can be so satisfying but can also seem endless. At some point you just need to put down the sand paper..

The piece measures 16x19, is 4 inches thick and 25 pounds!

#NoCNC.. just a router, Dremel, chisels, files, and sand paper. Process video on the way! by @samhotchwork

Still inking that paper and working on other projects 🙌🏼 Don’t worry I cleaned the floor. I wanted to try something here with some abstract faces and a topographic feel, and kind of ended up with a message about ideological division, or polarization of perspective. by @samhotchwork

New Sasquatch t-shirts available!! ✨ 👀

This illustration was inspired by the duality of our brain with one mammalian side and the other reptilian. Sasquatch is representing our mammal side, intertwined with a large snake which just felt fun, and right.

I also included some orbs in the background which are often associated with Sasquatch activity.

Help an artist by buying an original “premium heavyweight” tee (unlike every other Bigfoot silhouette shirt out there) Thank you😊🙌🏼

Really pumped on this piece! Took me a while to make certain decisions with it, but so happy with the result. Ink wash on paper with some white pastel and charcoal to finish it off. 🦁✨🐘
