Having spent the last two decades in the salon business, I have watched hair colour evolve from a largely corrective service into one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic segments of the beauty industry.

At LOOKS just like all other salons in every segment , colour services have grown significantly . What was once primarily about covering grey is now increasingly about self-expression, fashion and personal style.

The category has advanced on every front: more sophisticated formulations, stronger technical capabilities, premium products and a far broader palette of colour choices. Products are now enriched with ingredients such as Argan and Keratin, while a few Indian salon distributors are partnering with international manufacturers to develop their private-label offerings sourced from Europe, Turkey and other global markets.

The scale of this evolution is also evident in the investment being made in education. L’Oréal, with whom we have a deep partnership, has consistently invested in professional training through domestic education programmes and by bringing international trainers to India. This focus on education is strengthening technical expertise across the industry and enabling stylists to deliver more advanced colour services with greater confidence and consistency.

And perhaps the most significant change is the consumer. Younger women are experimenting with their hair in ways we simply did not see at the same scale a few years ago. It is no longer just about a touch-up or a global colour. It is about highlights, balayage, fashion shades, tonal changes and complete colour transformations.

The increasing number of brands, advances in technology, premium formulations, investment in education and rising demand for creative colour are all clear indicators of how rapidly this category is evolving.
After two decades in this business, I believe India’s colour journey has only just begun.

I had the pleasure of spending a lovely afternoon at the Grazia Indie Beauty Awards 2026, celebrating the founders and homegrown brands that are shaping the future of beauty in India.

It was particularly special to meet founders whose journeys I have watched closely over the past several years — seeing their ideas evolve, their brands grow and their persistence turn into success. And equally exciting was meeting a new generation of entrepreneurs who are just beginning their journey in what I believe is one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant beauty markets.

What makes me particularly happy is the increasing number of products being created for Indian skin, Indian hair and Indian environmental conditions. Our consumers have unique needs, and it is wonderful to see Indian entrepreneurs building solutions around those needs rather than simply adapting global products.

At LOOKS Salon, we have always believed that the professional salon industry has an important role to play in helping young beauty brands grow. Over the past 37 years, we have built a network of 250 salons across 53 cities, giving us a large and diverse customer and professional ecosystem.

I believe there is a tremendous opportunity for us to partner with some of these young brands — to help them understand the professional beauty industry, introduce their products to salon professionals and consumers, and together build brands that can grow from India to the world.

Congratulations to Grazia and to all the founders and brands celebrated at the Indie Beauty Awards 2026. …..🇮🇳💪👏

An exciting time for the wedding and hospitality industry—and an even more exciting time for LOOKS.

The growing demand for destination weddings and luxury celebrations across India reinforces something we have been building towards for some time: a deeper and more strategic presence within the hotel ecosystem.

Our strategy is firmly in place to expand our footprint within leading hotels and luxury properties, bringing the LOOKS experience directly to guests and wedding celebrations.

Today, our hotel presence spans Jaipur, Delhi and Mumbai, with Goa coming soon. These are important building blocks in our ambition to create a stronger pan-India hospitality platform.

At the same time, we have invested in building a dedicated Wedding Crew, bringing together expertise, premium partnerships and the operating capability to execute seamlessly at scale. With the team already fully booked, we are seeing strong validation of the opportunity ahead.

For LOOKS, this is about much more than weddings. It is about reimagining the role of premium hair, beauty and grooming within luxury hospitality—and creating experiences that complement the standards of the hotels we partner with.

This morning’s Mint raises an interesting question about the future of these premium beauty brands in the professional salon industry.

As established brands increasingly explore at-home and direct-to-consumer models, the bigger question is: what role will the professional salon continue to play in their growth? Or will they drop them ??

Premium beauty isn’t just about the product sitting in your home.

It’s about the experience — consultation, expertise, application, technique, service and the ambience.

Yes, an at-home model may get traction.

But wonder who controls the delivery experience?
The operator?
The brand?
Or ultimately the customer?

That’s where I have my doubts.

Because when it comes to premium beauty, the product is only half the story. The experience is the other half.

About 15 years ago, when I moved back to Bombay to build a beauty services business, I met Parthip.

By then, Parthip Thyagarajan and Madhulika Sachdeva Mathur had already created WeddingSutra — a pioneering wedding platform launched in 2000, well ahead of its time.

Since then, our paths have crossed every year — at WeddingSutra events, industry gatherings and, quite literally, at airports! I’ve been part of many WeddingSutra events, and Parthip has also been a wonderful patron of our salons.

So when he called and asked me to be on the jury for the WeddingSutra Influencer Awards, there was no hesitation. Of course, I said yes.

Walking into Taj Lands’ End, I was amazed to see how Parthip, Madhulika and the WeddingSutra team have transformed this into such a powerful IP.

Delighted to be part of the jury and present a few awards to some truly deserving talent.

26 years of WeddingSutra. 15 years of friendship. And still going strong. ❤️

Congratulations to the entire WeddingSutra family!🥂 taken in Taj Lands End, Mumbai by @samirsri

Spent an hour with a group of MBA students from NMIMS, and it took me straight back to my own days as an MBA student — that same restless curiosity, that hunger to understand how a business really works behind the scenes.
What struck me most was how clear-headed this generation is. No vague “let’s see where it goes” — these students know exactly what they want from their careers, and they ask sharp, thoughtful questions to get there. We walked through India’s beauty business , spent time at our LOOKS x PARCOS collaboration corner, and got into real conversations — about the LOOKS network, how a multi-location salon business is actually built and run, and my own journey across 25+ years in the beauty and wellness space.

Their questions weren’t textbook questions. They wanted to know how retail collaborations work on the ground, what it takes to scale a premium brand across cities, where the beauty industry in India is headed.
A fun detail — many of these students are also regulars at our salons for their hip-hop haircuts and personal grooming, so this wasn’t their first time engaging with LOOKS . It made the conversation even more real: they weren’t just hearing about the brand, they’ve experienced it in the chair.
& none of this happens without the LOOKS team on ground. Big shoutout to Zeeshan,Ibrahim, Gulam, Deena, Aisha, Anita ,Hritik & Stella , who represent our hair, beauty and operations verticals.

Happily, this isn’t where it ends — I’ve been invited to spend more time with them on campus, to give them a closer, practical look at the beauty industry from the inside.
I’ve always believed that a strong educational foundation, paired with real industry exposure, is what shapes the next generation of business leaders. And meeting these bright minds from NMIMS — hailing from Shillong, Surat, Raipur, Lucknow, Jabalpur, Bhubaneswar and beyond — was a reminder of just how vast and exciting the opportunity is for India, and for Indian businesses.
