For the Artist Sam Moyer, Inspiration Was Set in Stone. “She is one of the masters of playing with materials in our moment,” a curator said of Moyer, who has made glass look like brick and fabric look like rock.

Join us this Saturday, May 31 at 11am for a conversation between Sam Moyer and Cathleen Chaffee, Charles Balbach Chief Curator at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, in celebration of her current exhibition Subject to change at Sean Kelly, New York.

Featuring a dynamic body of new work, the exhibition features Moyer’s latest stone paintings, highlighting her distinctive combination of reclaimed stone and painted canvas, as well as oil on panel paintings and handmade paper works produced as artist in residence at Dieu Donné in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Dependents 7 is an experiment with precarity, and a mastery of balance and synergy. Though the two stone pieces that comprise this sculpture are sturdy and durable, their arrangement is anything but. Or so it seems at first. The pieces are angled against each other as if they might tip over and fall flat at any moment. But despite the seeming precarity, the two stone pieces remain stable, leaning against each other for support. The sculpture treads the boundary between strength (of the stone pieces) and fragility (of the structure), finding a point of harmony in the midst of tension.⁠

Our new exhibition, Woman with Holes, presents work by artist Sam Moyer alongside selections from the Hill Collection. ⁠
⁠
The exhibition is a survey of Moyer’s engagement with abstraction as a kind of dream logic, with familiar forms encountered in a strange context.⁠
⁠
The show displays Moyer’s work in the company of objects from the Hill Collection that similarly exist on the outer edges of functionality and reason, with pieces by artists including Robert Gober, Liz Glynn, Jasper Johns, Brice Marden, and Isamu Noguchi. ⁠
