This tennis court has been sitting on the ranch since 1990 — my dad built it, and loved playing tennis. He died in 2003, and decisions like this one are tough without him around. I’m at a crossroads: do I resurface it and honor the original vision, or convert it to a multi-sport rubber surface and open it up to more games, more people, more memories?

Turbulence packs a different punch when in the front left seat vs. the passenger seats. As a pilot, slow to maneuvering speed (or lower), keep the wings level, and ask ATC for ride reports and a better altitude, or a block of altitude to allow the aircraft to bounce along freely.
As a passenger, keep your seatbelt on and know that the airplane is built for this. Loose objects or an unbuckled seat belt are your biggest threats.

The Citation Mustang is one of the most popular entry level jets for owner pilots! For a lot of pilots coming out of turboprops and piston twins, it’s a natural first step into jets. Its systems are simple enough that the type rating is very approachable. And Cessna’s support network is awesome and does a great job at facilitating the process. It’s certified for single pilot operations, has a Garmin G1000 glass panel, and can cruise up around 40,000 feet at 340 knots.

Up here at FL280 the Meridian sips fuel compared to down low. Turbine engines love altitude! The air up here is thinner, so the engine uses less fuel to match that thin air for the perfect air to fuel ratio. Thin air also means less drag on the airframe, so up high I’m going faster over the ground while burning less.

Down low, the air is thick. More drag, more fuel, slower trip. That’s why I climb up high whenever a trip is long enough to justify the time to climb. It’s smoother, faster, and easier on the wallet.

The new 2026 F-150 Tremor makes ranch work a whole lot easier! The work never ends out here, and having a solid dependable truck with an easy to access truck bed is awesome! The tailgate step and pull out handle lets me climb up, grab tools and get back down without having to hop off the bumper or climb over the side. Little things like that add up when you’re doing it all day long! What’s your favorite truck feature on these new rigs?!

Annual Recurrent Training! This is usually the most exhausting day of flying I do all year, and one of the most valuable. Insurance requires it, but I’d do it anyway. Staying current is what keeps you sharp, and being ready for the unexpected. You never know when something could go wrong, and being prepared to handle the situation to the upmost of your ability is paramount.

Thank You to SV Aviators for always pushing me to be a better pilot.

Time to paint the Meridian! She’s a 2001, and the paint is chipping in more than a few spots. Not only for good looks, but once paint chips, bare metal is exposed and that’s how corrosion starts. Repainting now will protect the airplane for the long haul, and absolutely she’s going to look great!!

Do I keep the original Piper scheme, or go with a new custom design?! Comment ORIGINAL or CUSTOM.

My airport just got drafted into a fire fight!
The Dome Fire is burning in Yosemite, and more than a dozen federal firefighting helicopters moved into Mariposa. There was so much traffic that they closed the field to GA and turned it into a heli base.

It took some coordination with the heli base manager and the FAA, but I got approval to taxi out and depart. First stop out of here is San Diego to watch the Blue Angels at Miramar!

Stopped for fuel at Klamath Falls (KLMT) in the Meridian and had a full blown airshow upon arrival! Kingsley Field shares the runway with the 173rd Fighter Wing that was out training in F-15 Eagles and F-35 Lightning’s!!

The F-15’s put out more thrust than the jet weighs, so it can climb straight up and keep speeding up. It tops out above Mach 2.5, more than 1,900 mph. The F-35 can pass Mach 1.6 and packs a huge amount of power and technology into one airframe.

My turboprop climbs at about 1,500 feet per minute, so these jets make me look like I’m standing still. Huge respect to the pilots and crews who train here to keep our skies safe.

Some of the best moments in aviation are the ones you don’t expect! What would you rather fly, an F-15 or an F-35?!
