This cowl door latch is exactly why a preflight inspection is so important! One unlatched door is easy to miss on a quick glance, but at takeoff speed it can peel open, damage the airframe, or tear off completely. Not a problem I want to discover while rotating for takeoff. Slowing down, putting your hands on the latches, and looking twice makes a difference. A thorough preflight is one of the best safety tools you have, and it costs nothing! Turbulence packs a different punch when in the front left seat vs. the passenger seats. As a pilot, slow to maneuvering speed (or lower), keep the wings level, and ask ATC for ride reports and a better altitude, or a block of altitude to allow the aircraft to bounce along freely. As a passenger, keep your seatbelt on and know that the airplane is built for this. Loose objects or an unbuckled seat belt are your biggest threats. The Citation Mustang is one of the most popular entry level jets for owner pilots! For a lot of pilots coming out of turboprops and piston twins, it’s a natural first step into jets. Up here at FL280 the Meridian sips fuel compared to down low. Turbine engines love altitude! The air up here is thinner, so the engine uses less fuel to match that thin air for the perfect air to fuel ratio. Thin air also means less drag on the airframe, so up high I’m going faster over the ground while burning less. Down low, the air is thick. More drag, more fuel, slower trip. That’s why I climb up high whenever a trip is long enough to justify the time to climb. It’s smoother, faster, and easier on the wallet. What’s your favorite altitude to cruise at?! Let me know! Annual Recurrent Training! This is usually the most exhausting day of flying I do all year, and one of the most valuable. Insurance requires it, but I’d do it anyway. Time to paint the Meridian! She’s a 2001, and the paint is chipping in more than a few spots. Not only for good looks, but once paint chips, bare metal is exposed and that’s how corrosion starts. Repainting now will protect the airplane for the long haul, and absolutely she’s going to look great!! Do I keep the original Piper scheme, or go with a new custom design?! Had to stop and appreciate this brand new Daher TBM 980, which is one of the best in its class! It has a range of 1,730 nm, and climbs to 31,000 ft in under 19 minutes. It uses the new PT6E-66XT engine with FADEC and a five blade Hartzell prop. Up front in the cockpit is the Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics with three 14 inch touchscreens. It also has HomeSafe Autoland, and there’s Starlink in the back! Pretty amazing package for this single engine turboprop. TBM, Meridian, or Epic. . .Which one do you pick to own and operate?! My airport just got drafted into a fire fight! The Dome Fire is burning in Yosemite, and more than a dozen federal firefighting helicopters moved into Mariposa. There was so much traffic that they closed the field to GA and turned it into a heli base. It took some coordination with the heli base manager and the FAA, but I got approval to taxi out and depart.
