Artist Spotlight: Jorge Caiado Jorge Caiado is a DJ and producer with 20 years of experience, having released his first record in 2012 under the mentorship of house legend Chez Damier on Chicago’s Balance Recordings. A graduate in Sound Engineering and an alumnus of the international Red Bull Music Academy, Jorge combines technical expertise with natural talent and a deep passion for electronic music. He quickly established himself as one of Portugal’s top DJs, regularly performing at the best clubs and festivals in the country, as well as internationally at venues like Berghain/Panorama Bar, Tresor or Heidegluehen in Berlin, Smartbar in Chicago, Eden in Ibiza and Vent in Tokyo, to name a few. His influence extends beyond the DJ booth. As the label manager for Groovement for many years - one of Portugal’s most established labels over the last two decades - he also runs Inner Balance and has been the driving force behind Carpet & Snares Records in Lisbon since 2014. In addition to running Carpet record shop for the past decade, Jorge has developed several valuable tools for the Portuguese music community, such as a distribution service for labels, extensive catalogs, providing a platform for countless artists, mixing and mastering services as well as simply mentorship to newcomers. Since 2018, he has also been sharing the music that inspires him through his weekly show, Uma Espécie de Azul, on Radio Oxigénio 102.6fm. Jorge’s contributions to the Portuguese electronic music movement are undeniable, and his efforts to develop and shape the scene from various angles are highly regarded. For all these reasons, he has become a key figure in the underground community, whether in the studio, on the airwaves, in the record shop, or at the club. His dedication to music and the scene is relentless and unquestionable. Last Friday, I saw a dance floor glowing in the dark. Carried by the spirits of my mentors, I felt the souls of the ravers, Flowing through my aura. What an immense pleasure it was to close @mansions.bar last Saturday, especially on such a highly anticipated weekend like Halloween. This place will always have a special place in my heart — after all, it was the first venue that gave me the chance to play in front of a crowd two years ago. Thinking back to that first set, when I felt so much pressure just for playing a happy hour, and seeing how far things have come, surrounded now by people dancing to the music I love, it’s truly a priceless feeling. It’s been a long time since I uploaded a mix on my own SoundCloud; recently digs and a better understanding of the sound I’m pursuing inspired me to record something I made with my latest discoveries/unused tracks. Hopefully more to come soon, I’d like to share more stuff I’m creating but life in New York is always frenetic and busy. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes, like this one, everything comes out easy and smooth at first try. For the Volume 2 of Project Edgecast I wanted to try something different, a more experimental take on the sound I like to play with. Ethereal, liminal and gloomy vibes merge together resulting in a slow pace mix which gives a meditative, reflective sensation aimed at taking a break from this fast life. It was a pretty long journey to find the right tracks to create what I had in mind, I spent a lot of days wondering, deleting playlists, finding new artists, new music waves and exploring genres that I am not too familiar with. As wise people say, the journey is more important than the destination, and I feel I’ve learned a lot about myself while creating this mix. Unfortunately I don’t have too much time to dedicate to my music, because of this I like to see every new mix I drop as a checkpoint of my life. What you will hear is pretty much the result of what’s going on in my mind since the beginning of the year, probably the only thing I’m looking for is a little bit of relaxation in the air to kick out the tension we can all feel now. As Summer is fading away, it is time to stick my head out of my shell and start sharing some stuff I’ve been working to for some time. Project Edge is an idea and a visualization of a goal that, like life, is in a perpetual development and change. This will be a virtual space where I would like to share my feelings, opinions and ideas through the concept of sound. This is also a way to express my gratitude to all the people in the community that have been very welcoming and friendly to me all the time.
