Yes this is a mostly German language season for me! Looking forward to being back in Canada in February for Ariadne auf Naxos at the COC! This will be my SECOND production specifically built for both Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Teatro Verdi Trieste (previously Il Trittico!), and I’m excited to be back on the Toronto stage with this piece for a very special reason:

During the closed rounds of COC Centrestage 2016, the very first thing I sang in the Opera house stage was Harlekin’s aria, “Lieben, Hassen, Hoffen, Zagen” with Maestro Debus conducting. Therefore, this is a very close to heart opportunity I am happy to be a part of 10 years later!

I’ve lived in Germany long enough, and spent enough time in Vienna to know, that this piece is NOT German. No, it’s VERY VERY Viennese Austrian (very much looking forward to singing Lakai with the correct mindset 🤣 DU DEBATTE-KOMPONIST…). I’m glad to finally have the opportunity to know Ariadne properly from back to front with this amount of lived-in-knowledge! Harlekin is one of the last standard repertoire baritone roles that I haven’t done yet on stage, so this helps complete the repertoire list for the near future.

Looking forward to this Fauré Requiem in November with the @tbayso as part of their Reflections (Voices) program. I last performed the piece in concert in Toronto back before the pandemic! Those who know me know that my three favourite French composers are Debussy, Poulenc, and above all Fauré, and any opportunity to sing his music is one I’ll happily take.

Now I have to shout out both Rosemary Thomson & Catherine St-Arnaud.

Rosemary Thomson is the first conductor I can remember by name. The first person I ever saw conduct an orchestra, and the first person I ever saw collaborate with a pianist from the podium. She was the leader of so many Calgary Phil & Civic Symphony concerts that I watched as a child, and her work with the orchestras helped lay a foundation that lead me towards classical music as a career. I don’t know if she knows how much I remember of her work from that time (crazy that I can, since I was between 7-14 years old, singing in choir and studying piano at then named Mount Royal College’s pre-college piano program). Can’t wait to tell her in person how much her work has meant to me. I also credit her with teaching me from my first ever orchestral concert that there should NEVER be a barrier for a woman to lead an orchestra under any circumstance. Can’t wait to collaborate!

I met Catherine at the former art song institute in Vancouver in 2011, and we were in the same assigned group of 5 (4 singers and a pianist). We had so much fun that summer (I remember so many Debussy songs specifically!) and have never had the chance to work together since then. So looking forward to finally sharing the stage with her! It’s been too long!

This season I’m so excited to make my professional Wagner debut with Wolfram von Eschenbach in the Paris version of Tannhäuser, lead by Hendrik Vestmann on the podium.

Some backstory: I had been singing the Abendstern in concerts and recitals since post-school days (including my first opera galas with both @highlandsopera and @brottmusicfestival back in 2016/2017 respectively when I was 22/23 years old) and at both YAPS @margisonrichard told me to always keep the aria in practice rotation, as it’s basically German Bellini and he could hear that the role will come of use to me down the line. While I was in the @canadianopera studio, the General Director at the time in working sessions recommended I look at and work on the Wolfram excerpts for the future, since it seemed to already start to fit my voice, even at age 24. When I was selected for the last ever edition of the Stella Maris Competition, in feedback sessions from the jury group assembled by @michaelschade.tenor all suggested that I keep Wolfram as something to work towards, since they could hear it becoming a possibility for the European market. Even more time with the role of Wolfram was recommended when I first accepted my German fest contract in 2020. During the pandemic, the Operndirektor at the time worked on the entire role with me almost daily during the lockdown, again, to learn the ins-and-outs of how to correctly approach this repertoire for the future.

In September, I turn 33, and finally I feel ready to add this role and the beginnings of this repertoire to my work as a performer on stage. I hope to sing this rep as best as I can, since no other repertoire is so heavily debated, picked on, and scrutinized by our public (the cruelty of Wagnerites often yet unsurprisingly shocks me). I hope all that feedback from my YAP days from all those great voices of opinion comes to proper fruition. In the end, I’m just grateful as an Asian-Canadian singer that I have this opportunity, since for so many of us, being cast in this repertoire does not ever happen.

Happy Premiere Night to all involved in this production of Puccini’s „Il Trittico“ at Theater Kiel (production of Teatro Comunale di Bologna in coproduction with the Fondazione Teatro Lirico di Trieste). So looking forward to chewing on human remains as Marco in „Gianni Schicchi“, throwing severed limbs around and living the dream as a member of the undead while singing on the stage 🤣 (in all seriousness bravi tutti, this is some of the most fun I’ve had on stage in a long time! Toitoitoi all!)
