(this portrait is a part of a larger painting that is still in progress)

in my last two paintings, the projector has been a helpful guide but also became a crutch that i wasn’t sure i could be capable without. i was very afraid i would be exposed as an imposter this time when i lost the lines i had traced from the projector on the face.

this was an opportunity to prove to myself i am no imposter. i made the decision to face my fears head on and not allow myself to run from the hard parts for something easier. i definitely did it scared. i was especially afraid of the nose and lips. i had to try a couple of times to get it right, but i did it. i actually did the cheeks, nose, lips, chin, neck and hair all in one day. school really has taught me a thing or two!

i’m grateful to the work for showing me i’m capable of more than i think. this is actually the third time i have done a portrait from this specific image, and i think that just shows how much i love and honor this version of myself. the girl in the photo would have never known the woman i’m becoming, but i’ll always remember her.

so when you think you can’t do something, just know you’re probably in the perfect position to do it 🩵

come see the full work on display at Cal State East Bay’s University Art Gallery from 4/20 - 4/25

“American D̶r̶e̶a̶m̶: Most Privileged In My Lineage (Yet)”
2026
30 x 48 in
Water soluble oil on canvas

In my most recent work, “American D̶r̶e̶a̶m̶: Most Privileged In My Lineage (Yet),” I explore what it means to be “American” and for it to no longer be a dream, as it may have been for my immigrant parents and grandparents.

Taking inspiration from the late trailblazing Hung Liu’s “Resident Alien” (1988), I recreated my actual Real ID/Driver’s License to call attention to the ways that we as an American society validate (or don’t validate) citizenship, American identity, and moreover, a person as they are, regardless of where they come from.

At a time when being American feels despicable, I remember the privilege I have been granted by the generations before me to be born here out of no choosing of my own. Additionally, despite my distaste for where we are as a society, I recognize that I am a living manifestation of previous generations’ dreams. It’s no longer a dream, but a reality, that is unquestionably imperfect.

I’m so thankful to be able to do what others before me couldn’t, as a woman, and as a Filipino American. I can confidently say that I have already been given a life “better” or perhaps easier than those before me. That is my privilege.

Being the youngest in my family has granted me new, unseen, levels of progressive freedom, but I surely won’t be the last to receive such opportunities. I’m proud to say that the privileges I’ve been granted in this life will only allow more access and opportunities for “a better life” to the future generations in my lineage to come.

And I won’t gatekeep, swipe right to see how I did it! :) by @samviestudios

everything i (water-soluble) oil painted in 2025 from most recent to my first ever!

crazy to think the first time i laid my hands on oil paints was in january 2025 :o

so grateful to have been introduced to this medium and fallen in love with it ❤️‍🔥 i thought i was exclusively a drawer but i quickly learned how limitless the possibilities are for me as an artist

i did something i never knew i could do! every painting was the best i thought i could do, but now i know i was always just getting started 😼

en plein air - a french term for, “in the open air”

when artists discovered the innovation of paint in tubes, painting became portable and mobile. artists could reference a landscape outside, in that same landscape! this was quite the revolution as artists previously sometimes used pig bladders to store and transport their paints! i am sooo appreciative that they discovered paint tubes long before me. a couple artists well known for their en plein air paintings are claude monet and vincent van gogh.

alla prima - an italian term for, “at first attempt”

this technique involves applying wet paint onto wet paint in order to mix colors organically straight onto the canvas and to finish the painting in one attempt. taken in Alameda, California by @samviestudios

“Moonflowers,” (24 x 36) is an exploration of my Asian American experience. As a Filipino American woman at the intersection of being the first generation in my family to be born in America and my parents being the last generation to be born in the Philippines, I often think about where home is, what it looks like, and who my people are.

The assignment was to make a work like another artist. This was made in resemblance of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, and the American Solitude. This is my take on my Asian American Solitude.

My infinite gratitude to the subjects of my work, @secamedia & @ermoan ❤️‍🔥 my beautiful courageous Filipina besties, the Moonflowers

I’m grateful for my family, my heritage, and all who came before me, whose lives led me to be here, now, with all the abundance richness of my life 🇵🇭🇺🇸

Swipe to see where it started 🥹
