Samantha Vie Gelico (California State University, East Bay, ‘26) in direct response to #HungLiu: I first saw Hung Liu’s “Resident Alien” in 2024, at the @SanJoseMuseumofArt. Her work stood out to me because it was exciting to see another Asian face on a painting that took up so much space in a renowned, contemporary museum.

A year later, I learned to paint for the first time, and I wanted to see more Asian American representation taking up fine art spaces. I also wanted to make a political statement. I remembered Hung Liu’s “Resident Alien” and thought about the immense privilege that my little, 2 x 3 in. ID held in comparison to Liu’s green card. No one should ever be documented as a resident “alien.” Generations of American immigrants who came to this land of opportunity, are still identified as aliens, to this day.

Responding to Liu’s work has been at the core of creating my own. When I first started painting “American 𝖣̶𝗋̶𝖾̶𝖺̶𝗆̶: Most Privileged in my Lineage (Yet),” my mentor and professor immediately knew where my inspiration came from because, almost serendipitously, Liu had actually been his mentor. Even though I never got to meet her, I feel a deep connection to her work’s purpose. Liu’s legacy continues to live on, teaching, inspiring, and affecting the hearts of many today.

Swipe to see the artist working and Liu in her studio making “Resident Alien” in 1988. “Resident Alien” is currently on view at the San Jose Museum of Art.
