S K A T E + F O R A G E … this time last year we were wrapping up from Earth Rising Festival at @immaireland. @pamagar , @elidasaur and I had worked with people from community gardens + experimental urban green spaces to the skate community. @ncad_dublin FIELD, @dublinherbbike and @taplinsfields… Thanks to @highrollersdublin for the used decks which were made into collage pieces on display at IMMA for the festival. Our aim was to weave in a skateable foraging trail into the city’s fabric. The route we chose had to include smooth surfaces, quieter streets and disused + chemical free green spaces. Turning the commute into a playful and nourishing experience. We managed to find a route that was so much more than getting from A (temple bar Dublin City centre) to B (IMMA kilmainham).

Have printed some more skate + forage maps which go into more detail with the project and gives you the route to try out for yourself if you’re in Dublin city. taken in IMMA - Irish Museum of Modern Art by @samyelyel

Friday 9th of October get to the bantry market early for your local produce before heading on the ferry to oileán faoide / Whiddy island at 11:30am from bantry pier. We will follow a foot trail to Beal na tonnta beach on earthen trail for the most part. Bring along a light picnic to be shared here I’ll have some foraged seaweed snacks.

Following some time spent on the island during @westcorkliteraryfestival where I had the chance to interview @tim_hannigan1 on his newly released book The Pathless Land. Inviting a much needed conversation into the Irish landscape. While on the island I came across a stile just off the road that was so inviting. The two limbs of an oak tree parted to just the perfect height and width for the 3 yellow steps to reach and as I climbed up and onto the trail I was transported to a timeless place.

The invitation of the stile, the welcome of the stepping stone, the beckoning of the open trail. These are capillaries of flowing bodies- badger, hedgehog, human- bringing blood flow to the edges of landscape. We begin to feel our presence as integral to the environment as the passage of bird and cloud. Our footprint as welcomed a pattern as hoof or paw. 4 legs good, 2 legs good…

in opening trails we share a line of thought, a dream, a stream of air…with other beaks, snouts and mouths. We are realigning with ancestral constellations of nomadic movement. The scarred patterns are still discernible with only a small dusting to uncover. The imprint of a millennia of footsteps has left its mark just as the ice sheets or meteors. Here, we can allow our conversation on the trail be a blessing, adding yet another melody to the song all around us.

Supported by @cpwestcorkislands

The event is free for islanders and non islanders alike. The invitation is to walk together and bring the idea of land access as we actively exercise our rights to an existing trail stopping to forage along the way. Seeking to draw from historical footpaths into a shared future vision of closer relation to place.

D O I R T I S T E A C H . Pouring in. As the summer season comes to a close, we watch the bruised flowers browning, dock leaves wilt to rust, their thousand seeds falling from brittle stalk, off they go to meet their fate in the coming springs… the vitality of life so visible in the summer light is dimming, pouring back into itself, back to soil, back to timeless elements underneath and above us all. We, too, pour ourselves back in- gathering around the fireside. Gifting ourselves the deep nutrition of seeds, roots, seaweeds… side by side we sit at the long table, sharing stories, tastes, together… le cheile.

This Saturday 12th of September. In the very special setting of @nativecabins Béal an dá chab. @christabelcourtauldnt @the.nature.wave and will begin with a foraging walk to whet the appetite and open up our senses to the ever changing subtle life all around us. We will return to the table by the fireside and taste an array of dishes lovingly and carefully prepared using locally sourced and foraged ingredients. Adding story to our plates. With an emphasis on a collective experience we will walk out together then pour ourselves in…

€75

Starting at 11:30am for the forage followed by 5 course lunch. Finish around 3pm. taken in Béal An Dá Chab, Cork, Ireland by @samyelyel

Seaweed Surf + Stretch

A weekend of seaweed foraging, surf, sea inspired stretch and yoga movement, on inis Arcáin / Sherkin Island’s @sherkinnorthshore

We will spend time in ocean awareness- allowing our senses attune to the subtle signs in weather patterns, tides, sea bird activity and currents, wave formations…seeing what we can read from the seascape before stepping into the watery world.

We will open our palettes to the versatile tastes of seaweeds, pairing plants and algae with local produce, sharing dinners and breakfasts.

Having worked as a beach lifeguard and surf instructor, I will help the group feel at ease in waves, allowing our bodies float and surf with the confidence to fall in and enjoy it!

I would love to make this affordable to anyone interested so please message me if cost is an issue. Depending on accommodation choices- camping/ furnished bell tents / rooms- the price varies between €250 - €350. 2 nights / 3 days including brunch and dinner.

Ending the outdoor days with a sauna one night and music / story sharing session the next night.

More details to follow soon. Please message me if interested

F U T U R E H E R I T A G E

Next week is heritage week. I will take a group out foraging seaweeds, gathering fronds + scéalta as we go for a siúl along old coastal paths on oileán chleire, west cork. Retracing footsteps and an ancient activity together bringing our findings into play with seaweed inks on paper. Looking at the potential for foraging as an integral part of our heritage: a remembering + a reimagining.

Again collective learning and knowledge is at the essence here: our shared experience and skill is all the more powerful than that of the individual.

Inviting all islanders to join as well as visitors to the island. Bring your curiosity, open mind and a cup to fill (literally also).

With support from @cpwestcorkislands and @gaelyoga_by_jen

2pm. Meet-up at the Gaeltacht sign

This Friday the 14th of August. Bere island. Inviting all ages to share the experience of foraging in groups. The collective knowledge is endlessly deeper than that of the individual.

We will forage seaweeds and coastal plants then look back at our very own (bare)footsteps to celebrate our presence here on earth/sand/stone/sea with some unique bodyscape/landscape map making.

Meeting outside Dessie s bar at 12pm before making our way to cloughland strand by foot trail.

‘An edible journey through local & foraged foods of West Cork’

Join us this September 12th for a five course sharing lunch in the beautiful Native Cabins which is nestled amongst the humming village of Ballydehob.

Celebrating the beginning of Autumn through foraging & food and all the harvest this time of year holds.

The lunch will be prepared by the Immersive Foraging duo Jen & Samuel in collaboration with wonderful Chef and NT Christabel. All three are based in Ballydehob and are excited to create this fusion of foraged & local foods, all drawn from the surrounding landscapes and a beautiful way to honor and mark the changing seasons.

Beginning at 11.30am with an hour long forage led by Jen & Samuel in the grounds of Native which will then lead us into the lunch.

Booking and more info through bio.

Le grá,

These photos were captured at Writing The Next World retreat hosted by the ever inspiring @autumnmeghanbrown @adriennemareebrown + @bogandthunder at @inishbeg.

I felt so honoured to share a foraging walk, conversation and ink making practice with such a gorgeous group. The connections made reverberate with me still.

A treat to see @claire__davey again and to know that @mckeown.laurence was there too (I just about missed you!) + to connect with mo chara @sterlingduns again!

My little foraging apprentice was there to please the crowds too!

A couple weeks back at @levis_corner_house_ballydehob we put on our red shoes and danced.

There was a very sweet moment of dancing when a French couple travelling around Cork got up and moved…us all.

Was joined by @clairesupervie_illustration and @mollyomahonymusic for some songs.

Thanks to Joe and Caroline for having us and holding the space so wonderfully as always.
