More kōkako content in the top ten!

A special moment for kōkako conservation back in 2025. We welcomed 20 manu from the Hūnua Ranges (Te Ngaherehere o Kohukohunui). Since this release, members of the public have heard and spotted kōkako far more regularly in the Southern Enclosure.

This October we are celebrating 25 years of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.

As part of the celebrations, we are running a Species Of The 25 Years competition. Individuals, classes or whole schools can get behind any of our native species.

It could be a bird, lizard, insect, fish, tree, plant, fern, vine, moss, fungi... 🦉 🌳

To share your love for your chosen species you could create artwork, posters, songs, dances, poems, stories or anything else you can think of... 🎨 🎶

We’d love to display as many of the creations as possible in our Visitor Centre during October and beyond.

The winners, as chosen by our Chief Executive, will also grab a free Education Programme visit for their class (transport excluded).

It's Mental Health Awareness Week. This year's theme is 'Belonging Matters.'

We're proud that so many different people feel like they belong here. Whether it's mana whenua or manuhiri/visitors, members of staff or our wonderful volunteers, children with their school groups or retirees using their gold card, everyone is welcome!

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕📆

If getting out into nature and drinking coffee are two of your favourite pastimes, then we've got the perfect way for you to celebrate International Coffee Day! Pop along to the Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari Visitor Centre and enjoy a delicious, barista made coffee before heading into the sanctuary for a stroll.

If you are heading down the switchbacks - fully caffeinated - towards the entrance to the sanctuary, keep an eye out to the sides of the path. You may spot some coprosma species that are in fact in the same family as coffee!
