At first glance, you’d swear this Santa Rosa property was a legit art museum ✨

The towering metal building is built into a hillside, sheltering the interior and making a serious statement.

📍 5767 Trailwood Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95404

3 Beds | 2.5 Baths | 3,943 sqft | 4.28 acres lot size

Designed by @sanderarchitects the home is built for entertaining—and showing off. It’s been featured in loads of design magazines and won the American Institute of Architects and LA Merit Award back in 2003.

Enter the home into a vertical, inward-focused gallery space with a bright red sculpture and a dramatic, torqued steel wall that rises 22 feet. It’s adjoined by a curved floating staircase. A great room features picture windows, bamboo flooring, and French doors that open to a terrace. There’s also a 12-foot-wide built-in roll-down movie screen.

Floor-to-ceiling views make the lovely, bright, white kitchen even sunnier. It’s a cook’s dream with a six-burner cooktop, prep sink and pantry. There’s even direct access to a chef’s deck with an outdoor grill.

Adjacent is a cozy family room with built-in shelving and a wood-burning fireplace. Look and it and try not to imagine sipping local wine right here.

The master bedroom has vaulted ceilings with modern exposed beams, a walk-in closet, and a palatial master bath with calming blue hues. The remaining bedrooms are airy and spacious, and there’s a bonus room that works nicely for a home office. There’s a gym, too, so basically there are zero reasons to ever leave this compound.

Up the stairs and across a steel bridge lies another great room with long-range views. You can also access the second floor by the home’s very-own elevator(!).

Outside, there’s a two-car garage with an electric car charger and a workshop. Plus, there’s a pretty garden with a slate patio and a hot tub that overlooks the Valley of the Moon.

Offered at $1,953,000

CWC Mar Vista is a new Elementary and Middle-School Campus realized by Sander Architects in a unique way. The postage-sized lot yielded far more usable space than the school first imagined.
And we are proud to know that this visionary school will have the space to serve more children and families than ever before.

RECENTLY FINISHED: A state-of-the-art biochemical laboratory in the heart of Los Angeles. We highlighted the fabricated elements of the design in the clients’ own branding colors, including utilities, circulation and cabinetry. The construction elements, steel frame and corrugated deck, remain in full view, like the building's anatomy.

Sander Architects loves their models. We learn so much about the space, the idea, the project when it is in a semi-real state. It's something no computer can capture: a model is a sketch in real time and it allows us space to imagine changes, iterations, options that the digital world does not. It gives us an extraordinary amount of information about the structure itself.

Our project "Homes for the Future" (in collaboration with @maisonsusgenix) has won the Green Good Design Sustainability Award 2024! @gooddesignawards Green Good Design was originally founded in Chicago by Eero Saarinen and Charles & Ray Eames.

At Sander Architects, one of our super powers has always been our use of materials. In this project we used recycled, eco-friendly steel, tile, concrete stain -- and then included some of the coolest stairs we have ever designed. We do love designing stairs.
