Very, very stoked on this one. Like every skater from my generation I wanted to do a bank to fence plant after seeing Natas part in Streets on Fire in 1989. I am no stranger to footplants and jumping against (banked) walls but never in some 40 years of skating did I dare commit a proper one, that is without touching ground first. One reason is that I could never find a bank to fence. That is untill the recently renovated Amsterdam spot Veldje 14 got one. All hail Natas and next time I'll jump back into the bank. Maybe.

CALL FOR INPUT! For years now, I’ve been planning to write a book on the history of skating in the Netherlands (roller skating and skateboarding – the latter grew out of the former). Drawing partly on my own experience (as an old-school skater), I’ve gathered a lot of material, and even more in recent years. There isn’t much out there. I’d already started writing, but due to other projects (Nerée, Sarluis) I didn’t have the time. Now I’ve started again, and where else to begin but the 19th century? From the 1870s onwards, the first ‘skating rinks’ appeared in the Netherlands; that is well documented. But what exactly did these Dutch roller rinks look like? No images to be found; I’ve never come across any in over 20 years as an antiquarian book & prints dealer. The only thing is the skating rink game, circa 1880, and then only Leo Gestel’s 1911 painting of the Paleis Volksvlijt skating rink (coll. @marksmitkunsthandel ). Does anyone know or have anything? Thank you!

As some of you may know, I, a very old skateboarder, have been documenting the history of Dutch skating for years. Initially, this was for an exhibition combining skating and art. However, this fell through due to covid. After that, I helped @bru_town with his documentary about the history of skating. The idea was to screen it alongside an exhibition on Dutch skating. As a professional writer, researcher and art historian, I was going to write the accompanying book. Due to time constraints caused by other major projects, a lack of funding, and a general lack of organisation within the skating community, the project has been put on hold for the time being. Now that I have time again, however, I have decided to simply carry on writing the book. It's a project that I can't let go of, and I've been collecting material for it for seven years. All I need now is a publisher and some funding! If you have any historical Dutch skate (skateboarding but also rollerskating of course) material from before 1990, please get in touch!
