Amsterdam old skool skate nerd

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

CALL FOR INPUT! For years now, I’ve been planning to write a book on the history of skating in the Netherlands (roller skating and skateboarding – the latter grew out of the former). Drawing partly on my own experience (as an old-school skater), I’ve gathered a lot of material, and even more in recent years. There isn’t much out there. I’d already started writing, but due to other projects (Nerée, Sarluis) I didn’t have the time. Now I’ve started again, and where else to begin but the 19th century? From the 1870s onwards, the first ‘skating rinks’ appeared in the Netherlands; that is well documented. But what exactly did these Dutch roller rinks look like? No images to be found; I’ve never come across any in over 20 years as an antiquarian book & prints dealer. The only thing is the skating rink game, circa 1880, and then only Leo Gestel’s 1911 painting of the Paleis Volksvlijt skating rink (coll. @marksmitkunsthandel ). Does anyone know or have anything? Thank you!

Carel de Nerée tot Babberich
From 13 April to 21 Sept 2025, Dordrechts Museum is hosting the exhibition ‘Carel de Nerée. Different from the others’.

The works of Carel de Nerée tot Babberich (1880-1909) include some of the most fascinating in Dutch art around 1900. They evoke associations with the works of Aubrey Beardsley, Gustav Klimt and Jan Toorop.

The exhibition is curated by my friend Sander Bink, who is an expert on Dutch queer / symbolist / erotic art of the fin-de-siècle. Sander has studied the life of De Nerée for decades, resulting in a recently published biography. The biography is available at the museum shop as well as regular (online) books stores.

When I visited the exhibition for the second time, I asked Sander about his favorite works in the exhibition. Please enjoy this short compilation of his selection.

The art of skateboarding! 🎨➡️🛹

We teamed up with @dordrechtsmuseum to turn Carel de Nerée art into skateboards. @douwemacare Took one of ‘em for a spin before we head to the museum to see the original in person!

The Carel de Nerée collection is now on display at Dordrechts Museum, and big props to @sanderbink for diving deep into this artist with his own book and coming up with the idea to print skateboards of the collection.

The skateboards are available for purchase in the @dordrechtsmuseumshop
