Last Friday evening, I had the pleasure to lead a conversation during the opening on an art exhibition and installation, Wombs, Wounds, Will, by the amazing Angella ILIBAGIZA, an artist and health practitioner.💚

Thoroughly researched and well documented and presented, Angella's recent work invites us to explore 15 diseases that gravely affect women, and she put together a resourceful learning guide.

I began the conversation with a general knowledge quiz for the public around women's health, surprisingly almost 50% of the respondents got common questions wrong. This unfortunately is the reality. Many people including women have very little knowledge about our bodies.

In conversation with Revocathe Girimpundu from Rwanda Women Doctors For Reproductive Justice and Bazirisa Uwishyaka, Gender Representative at Rwanda Union of Little People (RULP), we explored menstrual cycle, postpartum depression and psychosis and how to help new moms, how people with disabilities experience health care services differently, and why all of us must listen to our bodies and care for it physically, mentally and socially.

The key take away they left us was to always be curious and ask. Women's health is notoriously underfunded; however, in Rwanda some positive changes have been made. It's key that we collectively keep pushing for body autonomy, inclusivity, and better healthcare services.

The public quiz included a section for our audience to share topics they find difficult to discuss. Honorable mentions are sex, abortion, menopause, lack of libido, infertility, choosing to be child free, rape, miscarriage, and incontinence after birth.

These are things I am planning to explore further myself.

It was a wonderful discussion even though I did speak way too much (translating from English to Kinyarwanda or vice versa). 😅
