What a day!

Today, we had our first book signing at @quailridgebooks for Akeem Keeps Bees, and over 90 people came out! The kids were locked in, asking questions, and fully engaged—it reminded me how much I’ve missed working directly with them.

It’s been over five years since I last read to a group of kids in public, so I was definitely a little nervous. But seeing their excitement made it all worth it.

Big thanks to @quailridgebooks for hosting us and to all the families who showed up. This is just the start!

How can a farm help a community thrive? 🌱❤️

To everyone new here, welcome to Sankofa Farms! I’m Kamal Bell a husband, father, farmer, author, and public speaker.

We grow vegetables, teach young people through our youth academy, and work with policymakers to address challenges facing our community.

Our vision goes beyond growing food. We see agriculture as an anchor for building the institutions and resources our communities need to thrive.

What’s one thing you wish your community had more of? Tell us below. 👇

A principal said no to a school garden. So a teacher bought a farm.

Kamal Bell was teaching middle school science in Durham when he proposed a garden where students could learn to grow food.

After the proposal was turned down, he borrowed about $70,000 and bought 12 overgrown acres. He spent two years transforming land that had been used as a dumping ground into farmland.

Today, that land is Sankofa Farms—home to a youth academy where young people learn to grow food, care for bees, and become leaders in their communities. by @sankofafarms

NC FARMER IS HEADED TO HARVARD

From @ncatsuaggies to @harvard

@kamalbell_ is headed north as a @loebfellows, where he’s taking on a new title: food systems architect.

What the heck does that even mean? We asked.

And his idea about treating farms like civic infrastructure is worth hearing.

I was recently named the 2026 @ncfarmbureau North Carolina Farm Bureau Achievement in Agriculture Award winner!

I didn’t grow up on a farm or in agricultural programs. I became a farmer to serve my community and that remains the heart of @sankofafarms.

We’re just getting started.

A powerful and inspiring conversation with @kamalbell_ , founder of @sankofafarms and Youth Academy in North Carolina, on @africandiasporanews

Kamal Bell is using agriculture to empower Black youth, especially those considered at risk, transforming the land into a classroom, a safe space, and a pathway to purpose and leadership.

We discuss the inspiration behind the name “Sankofa,” the importance of reconnecting with our roots, the divide within the African diaspora, and why more Black people should consider farming as a source of ownership, food security, and generational wealth.

A little snippet of my interview withKamal Bell, founder of @sankofafarms and Youth Academy in North Carolina for a powerful conversation on @africandiasporanews

What started as farming has grown into something much bigger. Kamal Bell is using agriculture to reach Black youth, especially those considered at risk, and turning land into a classroom, a safe space, and a pathway to purpose.

In this interview, we get into the real story behind his journey, what inspired him to start, and how teaching agriculture is reshaping mindsets, building discipline, and creating opportunities where they’re often denied. This is about more than growing food. This is about growing leaders.
