Children can’t dream of becoming something they’ve never seen. 🐝

That’s why my son Akeem and I wrote Akeem Keeps Bees.

We want children everywhere to see themselves as scientists, farmers, authors, and changemakers.

Because the next generation shouldn’t just inherit the world. They should believe they can shape it ❤️🐝

A Durham science teacher asked for a school garden and got told no.

So he bought 12 acres of dumping ground instead, and now teaches Black teenagers to farm it while ending a local food desert in the process.

A Durham science teacher asked for a school garden and got told no.

So he bought 12 acres of dumping ground instead, and now teaches Black teenagers to farm it while ending a local food desert in the process.

Kamal Bell’s students said the land “looked like nothing” when they first saw it.

Now that same trash dump has been regenerated into greenhouses, beehives, and thriving crop fields feeding an entire community.

A principal said no to a school garden, so a teacher bought a farm.

Kamal Bell taught middle school science in Durham and wanted kids growing food.

Turned down, he borrowed about seventy thousand dollars and bought 12 weedy acres.

It took two years to carve fields out of what had been a dump.

Sankofa Farms now runs a youth academy on that same ground.

NC FARMER IS HEADED TO HARVARD

From @ncatsuaggies to @harvard

@kamalbell_ is headed north as a @loebfellows, where he’s taking on a new title: food systems architect.

What the heck does that even mean? We asked.

And his idea about treating farms like civic infrastructure is worth hearing.

I was recently named the 2026 @ncfarmbureau North Carolina Farm Bureau Achievement in Agriculture Award winner!

I didn’t grow up on a farm or in agricultural programs. I became a farmer to serve my community and that remains the heart of @sankofafarms.

We’re just getting started.
