When we think of wildlife photography in Africa, lions, elephants, giraffes, and vast savannas naturally come to mind. But the continent also offers other surprising encounters.

The coasts of South Africa and Namibia are home to the only penguin species that breeds naturally on the African continent: the African penguin (spheniscus demersus), and the story of the Boulders Beach colony is particularly interesting.

In 1982, just two breeding pairs settled naturally along this stretch of the South African coast. Unlike most colonies of the species, which breed on islands, these penguins found a suitable habitat on a mainland beach surrounded by massive granite boulders approximately 540 million years old.

The reduction in commercial fishing in False Bay helped increase the availability of sardines and anchovies, the penguins’ main food sources. With abundant food and favorable breeding conditions, the colony grew rapidly over the following decades.

But this growth brought new challenges..located in a residential area of Simon’s Town, the expanding colony began occupying gardens and other spaces near people's homes. The noise, the presence of the penguins, and increasing tourism led to conflicts with local residents.

The solution came through the establishment of a protected area. In 1998, SANParks took over management of the colony, which became part of what is now known as Table Mountain National Park.

Fences were installed to limit the penguins’ access to residential areas, while boardwalks were built to allow visitors to observe the birds without directly disturbing their nesting sites.

Boulders Beach is a clear example that conservation does not have to be a choice between people OR wildlife. With protection, respect, and rules for coexistence, it is possible to find solutions that benefit both.

Even with a protected colony, conservation measures, and decades of efforts to ensure its survival, the African penguin remains Critically Endangered. Città del Capo è un viaggio anche nel mondo animale.

Qui puoi incontrare gli iconici Pinguini africani di Boulders Beach, osservare le Otarie del Capo lungo la costa e, con un po’ di fortuna, avvistare balene e delfini nell’oceano. E poi ci sono i Babbuini e Struzzi, che vivono nelle aree più selvagge della penisola.

Una città dove la natura non fa da sfondo: è protagonista.

📍Pinguino Africano del Capo
Sono animali monogami e scelgono un compagno per tutta la vita, famoso per la storica colonia presente a Boulders Beach spiaggia dove sono completamente liberi. Qui si riproducono.

📍Otarie Orsine del Capo
Sono animali molto curiosi, giocherelloni e attivi, vivono numerosi lungo le coste del Sudafrica, ma è facile vederle riposare anche sul moli del porto.

📍Babbuino Nero
Vivono in branchi complessi e gerarchici, una delle scimmie più grandi al mondo. E anche tra le più pericolose. Prestare sempre attenzione.

📍Struzzo Comune
Molto facile avvistarli. Raggiungono un’altezza di 3 metri e un peso tra i 120 Kg, confermandosi come i più grandi uccelli viventi al mondo. E tra i più belli e affascinanti.

📍Cassie Procavia
E’ un piccolo mammifero erbivoro molto comune nelle zone rocciose di Città del Capo, famoso soprattutto per essere il parente genetico vivente più vicino allelefante, per via delle sue ossa al suo interno.
