⚫️ Another marker drawing on a spare white IKEA BILLY bookcase shelf, but this time blocked shapes. If you look back at my last post, the dragon illustration uses only lines 〰️

👤 This was very satisfying to make - drawing random shapes and running the tools over the surface to give them a solid ink fill. I’m drawn to silhouettes and bold, simple forms so it really catches my eye when I enter the room.

☁️ Decided to have a go at drawing the gold dragon in black on a white IKEA shelf and ended up with a fully fledged doodle, including some clouds inspired by some previous work in miniature painting.

✍️ The most important thing I’ve learnt about drawing is to let go of any expectations of what you wanted the picture to look like. Just have fun making marks on whatever surface you’re using. If it turns out to be something you enjoy looking at, then that’s a bonus.

🐉 If you like this dragon, take a look at my previous post, where you can see the original illustration in gold on a decorative lacquerware plate.

Gold dragon on lacquered plate 🐉

[Held up against a white background, a lacquered plate moves around catching the sunlight. Detailed on to its orange and black patterned surface, the image of a dragon’s head enters from the right, shimmering in gold. As the music plays, the words gold, dragons, reflection and sunlight appear above the plate. More designs like this will follow.] by @santhemaker

Enjoyed making this quick little card for Rakshabandhan. I really enjoy writing with watercolour like ink and watching this process unfold.

I’m not sure if this counts but do you remember learning about liquid surface tension as a kid?

That glossy sheen a fleeting joy.

I need to practice my Gujarati alphabet (don’t even get me started on actually speaking the language).

At this point I started to worry that I didn’t like the colour once dry but sometimes you’re too close to something you make and need to take a step back to enjoy it.

Wins all-round 🎉
