Workshops were based in the home in Britain. Products were made and sold from the same premises in which you lived. In the US, products were imported and stored to be resold. That's why the Brits have shops and the Americans have stores.

Here's an example of a late 19th/early 20th century shop in the Black Country Living Museum.

"You still have to write the book!" This was definitely a loud message from my long-passed dad stopping me from burning all his notes — but it still took me another two years before I believed that I could actually write the story.

Thanks to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal ('Staff & Woos') Wombourne became a renowned centre for hand-made nail making during the industrial revolution. Wombourne is not in the Black Country, but it's not far. The Black Country was also a centre of importance for nail-making and exported their nails far and wide.

It was on a canal boat, pulled by a horse and filled with nails that Matthew Seller found his way to Birmingham, in A Legacy Forged.
