The back wall of the gallery doesn’t get many reels here on Instagram as it’s tricky to cover and always looks best in the flesh…but it’s looking so fab in the sunshine I thought I had to share…

Idler retreat part two at New Hermopolis an oasis built in the desert by Dr Mervat Nasser 15 years ago after the discovery of a spring. Mervat has also put considerable work into reviving the ailing Egyptian blue lotus flower which is believed to have magical powers and used to thrive along the banks of the river Nile. Mervat is currently working on building a second blue lotus pond stretching from New Hermopolis to her mausoleum which has already been built.
During our time at this fabulous sanctuary we were entertained and educated listening to talks by Tom Hodgkinson “Mr Idler “, Dr Mark Vernon and Dr Mervat Nasser. We were also sung to by a local small girls choir watched an internationally acclaimed Egyptian stick dancing group and their band, plus had a campfire in the desert where we each took turns to read or recite our favourite poem.
The Egyptian food served was five star could not have enjoyed it more.

I recently travelled to Egypt with @idlermagazine/ academy and had a really amazing time . This was my third Idler retreat, their inaugural retreat in Egypt. We spent 2 nights in Cairo prior to driving south into the desert. This post covers our visit to the pyramids at Giza which Egyptians now believe were repurposed sometime around 2500BC rather than being built then, as they have disproven systems formerly thought to have been implemented in order to construct them. I believe that they were built much earlier by a species with super powers as some of the stones weigh up to 70 tonnes which not even an army of men could move in our current carnation.

1.Great pyramid at Giza with fluffy cloud. The pyramids here were originally covered in white polished limestone, but these stones were repurposed throughout time.

2. @idlermagazine cohort beside the great pyramid.

3.The Sphynx at Giza - very happy with the minute pair of horse riders in the horizon here they underline the scale.

4.Me soaking up the energy / being weird (as ever ) inside the Queens tomb at Giza - the Egyptians are very relaxed in their approach as you can see 😅

5.Exterior entrance of Grand Egypt Museum, Cairo (only opened last November ) architects Henegan Peng ( Irish Roisin Henegan and Taiwanese American Shih-Fu Peng) I reckon the Egyptians will be paying this one off for eternity …..

6. Ramses II inside Grand Egypt Museum entrance where they included a light window to enable the last rays of the setting sun to fall on his face as was his death wish. This gigantic sculpture was moved through the streets from Cairo train station to its new home in the museum upright ….just incredible.

7. The head of Akenaten displayed at the Grand Egypt Museum, he was a true rock star style idol of the Egyptian Pharoes for me (father of Tutankhamen, husband of Nefertiti ) he decide to start worshipping only one God, Rah the sun God . I’m totally with him there , esp as my name means son of Rah in Egyptian ;)
Princess in Hebrew which adds up to the same 🫢.

8. Tutankhamen’s gold death mask displayed at the Grand Museum Cairo, just breath taking ….

Thanking the seriously stylish and flamboyant Brigid Loizou director of @studiocennen, for welcoming me and my art into her fold last year. Her roots are in fashion and perhaps because of this she curates cutting edge shows which to me are an absolute breath of fresh air.

1. Brigid not being camera shy December 2025 😉

2. Brigid at the opening of “Out of the Blues “ my inaugural exhibition

3. Stanley one of Brigid’s dogs.

4. Me posing by “Artists Collection “ last December
