Selbstexplosion • 190 x 150cm /// 6.3 ft x 5 ft oil on canvas.
This is my first oil painting, and first attempt at experimenting/expressing myself in a fundamentally different way. The process was entirely unrestricted, letting go of preconceived outcomes and trusted that each moment was only for learning/practice, release and enjoyment. It took many months to make, and consider this the very beginning of where I’m heading. by @sarahbbolen

SHADE DRAGONS • 2026 • acrylic on canvas • 24 x 36” /// 61 x 91cm •
Very happy to finally share this commission painting for @rolfandhisbikes ! He requested it to be in black & grey, which I was so excited to try. It was difficult creating the shades, tones, etc, in actual black & white mixtures. So I experimented with various colours in order to make contrasts and variants work. Here’s the recipes, all mixed with white (about 4-7 shades per colour each):
Payne’s Gray: beautiful cold bluish violet
Neutral Grey Nr. 5: earthy brown base.
Cadmium Orange & Ultramarine Blue - 40/60: icy bluish.
Cadmium Orange & Ultramarine Blue - 60/40: icy greenish.
Only black used was for the pupils! It was absolutely fascinating to see how the mixes, on their own, showed a perfect grey, but when used next to another, totally different and revealed the stark differences in their bases. So much fun! The scales took 5,5 hours each dragon lol!
.
Thanks for lookin folks!! I am officially taking on new commissions now! Let’s get started and have a cool conversation piece for Christmas and New Year’s! Thank you so much, Rolf! Please feel free to share, like, comment, it helps artists a lot 🧡 by @sarahbbolen
